I have tried so many different dog foods and have fed all different amounts. I never feed more than 2 cups. 1 cup makes no difference, 1/2 daily makes no difference and only half starves the poor thing. Exercise does not work either.

I had the same problem with my dog, a Lab mix he weighed 115 lbs. The Vet suggested a Hills brand sold only at Vets. Not Science Diet but one that caters to dogs and cats different health needs. My dog was started on a RD (reduced diet) program and he has lost 30lbs. He now weighs 85lbs and looks great. The Vet gave him a combo of dry and moist food. 1cup of dry and 1/2 canned and he loves it. I thought it wouldn't be enough for him but no problem. It really works, go to your Vet and get started. Good Luck.

the dog really shouldn;t be eating more than a cup a day. 2 cups is an ENORMOUS amount for a dachshund. how about treats...people food or too many milk bones will cause weight gain. i say get to the vet pronto. Doxie's are known for being overweight and the vet may have prescription diet you can feed...also talk about hypothyroidism. this is where your dogs thyroid gland is not functioning properly which can cause all sorts of problems including weight gain. if this is truly your dogs problem NO amount of dieting will get the weight off! Hypothyroidism can be determined through a small blood test and easily controlled with a very cheap medication that your pet will need for life! good luck!

you have to do several things all at the same time.
#1 put the dog on Hill's prescription diet called R/D ( reducing diet) you will have to buy it from your vet.
#2 feed only the recommended amount , no treats of any kind.the amount you feed will

l be on the bag of food. It's the amount you want the dog to weigh not what the dog weighs now.
#3 exercises daily, increasing the amount as the dog looses weight.
#4the weight will come off slowly 1 to 2 lbs a month
#5 don't give up

I have 2 dachunds and I have never seen one that big. Both of mine weights around 15 pounds... Those dogs love to eat...they will eat until they die. You should get your Vet to check him out. There may be an under line medical reason for his weight problem. Good luck!

Dachsunds are prone to thyroid problems. See what a vet says.
