I think it's very sensible to wait quite a while before you ask someone out. I mean, you've gotten to know each other a bit, hopefully enough to have some inkling whether the person fits your criteria for a permanent relationship.
Personally, I'd wait to ask until there was a concrete need to talk about things that just aren't suitable for public consumption. Until then, you can always spend time in groups, go out together with the gang on Saturday night, or Sunday afternoon, or whatever.
Doing that for a while will make it easier to ask her out later if you feel the need to talk privately.

i have a major hard time, but of course i wouldn't really ask a woman out if i don't really know her
