my inlaws have a sony dvd player, and connected it to and old consol tv, through the inputs on the vcr, now while watching, movies the color switches back and forth from color, to black and white, whats wrong with it

Most DVDs do not allow you to play through the VCR inputs .... some VCRs Totally Scramble the image and Ive seen some that the colors kind of vibrate from bright to dull ...... this is mainly to protect DVDs so that people could not copy them. Good Luck

The VCR acts as a filter - this was done back in the day to prevent piracy - you could rig up two VCR's and let one play a movie while the other one recorded.
If you can, try to plug the dvd player directly to the TV. The way it sounds, it doesn't look like that will work though cuz of the age of the television.
Two options left - buy another TV or buy a converter, which really doesn't translate the picture very well (nowhere near as clear as it should be).
Nowadays, it's obviously gotten far more high-tech.
