Since I am a New Yorker I can only really do the reverse and compare certain European cities to NY. I'd say it was most similar to Amsterdam and Paris. Obviously there are major differences, but the whole walking culture, a mix of historic and new architecture, constant activity, up all night long, mix of culture, range of activities, dining experience, and so forth. I seriously felt like when I went to Paris that I was at home in NY, but that more people spoke French.
It's like Paris would be the Madison Ave, 5th Ave, or SoHo part of NYC, where Amsterdam has elements representing the Upper West Side, East, and West Villages.

New York is Unique. I travel frequently and I don't think there is a European counterpart.
Some of the older parts of New York may remind you of places in Europe. Areas where there are Brownstones (attached houses) can be reminicent of London. Canal Street certainly has the same vibe as Hong Kong. (I know, that's asia!)
Upper Park Avenue reminds me of some of the Boulevards in Paris....as does the areas around the Metropolitan Museum.
Lower Manhattan certainly feels like the city in London, because the street patterns are not laid out in a grid and there is a mix of old and new.
But to pick one city to compare to NY is impossible.
You should come and visit...see for yourself!

You can't compare New York to any European City. European Cities are light and New York is a Stone Jungle. You have to come and visit, to see it and judge it yourself . You either like it or hate it. Have fun!

You cannot compare New York to any other city. New York is New York. Even Tokyo (the largest city in the world) isn't like New York. There is nothing quite like it. I say it's a wonderful place and I am Californian.

I live in New York. I has been to London five times and they do share some things: Both are very densly populated, fast paced high energy cities. Both are major world financial centers. Both have a world famous theatre district and are major entertainment and shopping destinations. Also a lot of venues for music, and a lot of musuems and both have a big park in the middle. Also both have a lot of immigrants. They also both have tons of pigeons and a vast subway/underground system. So I do find a lot of similaraties between New York and London. They kinda smell the same -- Bus exhaust. Of course they have things that set them apart also.

Banning guns received't stop criminals from getting guns. Washington DC and massive apple city have strict gun administration, yet have the utmost crime prices. guns that are used to devote crimes are not were given legally besides, so what ought to offer up them at the same time as they're unlawful? I grew up contained in the city the position the worst coaching shooting EVER befell, and that i'd have the capacity to stroll down the line competently, and not worry an attack. 'the nra are literally not something notwithstanding uneducated idiots" LMAO this from a guy who can't style a sentence properly. Member's of the NRA are a lot less liable to devote a criminal offense with their guns than those who do not seem a member, and those who acquire guns illegally. likely anybody needs to seem into what the NRA extremely is, and what they stand for. My brother is a member of the NRA and he has his Masters, and is an officer contained in the army. plenty for uneducated, huh?

Closer to London than other European cities I've been to (Paris, Rome, Vienna, Munich, Amsterdam).
It's definitely got it own vibe though. It's not as casual as European cities, and it has that brash American edge.
It's a great place to visit, you'll have a blast.

nyc is a city on its own. no city in europe (i've been to 12 countries) can compare. it will wear you out w/in 4 days, if you are not "city" folk. .,.and ground zero is nothing you will ever see... it's a "creator" in the middle of everything... the subways (hope you aren't there during the heat wave) smell of pee... but, with that said, it is an AWESOME city (the energy, the people, the EVERYTHING) to visit & live in (if you have lots of $$$$)... enjoy your stay!

No. Rome is full of people hanging around famous places to sell it. NYC is a city built on a large rock. A fast city.
