The USA has the highest rate of church attendance of any industrialized country. Plus, according to Wikipedia: "In the United States, one in seven people (more than 40 million people) can barely read a job offer or utility bill, which arguably makes them functionally illiterate in a developed country such as the US."

And the high rate of religion does not result in the high rate of illiteracy. I suggest that the reverse is true: More illiteracy --> less critical thinking --> more religion.

It is not so much Religion to blame but rather economics, When wealth is not properly distrupited in a government then the money goes to the wrong places, the schools are not as up kept as they should be.

thus this is what happens, high illiteracy. Claiming that it is the result of religion is not only ignorant but arrogant on the persons part.

It is interesting to note that belief in the supernatural (religion) in the USA (87%) is consistent with backward, developing 3rd world nations, rather than with other modern, industrialized powers. That is downright shameful.

Applying that number (87%) to the Weschler IQ scale, I'd have to say that the bulk of the religious in the USA account for IQs 122 and below.
