It sounds like a cache that has you visit a first location to gather information in order to find a second location. At this second location, you gather information to send to the cache owner in order to claim credit on the cache. You might be required to submit a photograph of yourself at the second site instead, but I would see that happening only if the second location isn't well-known location-wise.
On http://www.geocaching.com/, virtual caches are no longer permitted, although those that existed beforehand have been allowed to continue to function. Hope that helps.

There are many types of caches - both physical (ie Traditional, Multi-caches, Letterbox Hybrids, Mystery or puzzle caches and Events where there is actually something there with a log to sign) and ones that are only a location or a task you need to perform (Webcam, Locationless, Virtual, Earthcache - which are all being moved to www.waymarking.com).
Multi-caches can be two steps or more before you reach the final cache were you sign a log. This sounds like one of the steps (or stages) is a virtual where you would need to find an object - say a sign or plaque - where you would perform some math to reach the final stage.

If you've done multi-caches and virtual caches, this should be self-explainable: You do the first part (but you're looking for an object that probably has writing on it) that will give you clues where to find the next V-cache.
