lol, some men cant stand having the goey feeling in the back of their throat. Some people have acid reflux, which chucks up about a teaspoon of hot thick flem.
Smokers, get alot of flem, and people who drink alot of hard liqour, mostly men, will get alot of flem.

Its a nationwide problem not just a local thing. The reason for the laws to stop it was because of the TB epidemic and other disease which was spread through the spitting. It is a disgusting habit which people had developed through imitation of others and because of unsanitary dental hygiene, smoking, etc etc causing a bad taste in the mouth. Some others instead of taking the time to blow their nose rather suck it into their mouth and just spit it onto the ground.

This is a custom of people who are not used to living in cities and don't realize the sanitation issues they are creating.
You find spitting to be more of a problem in countries that are mainly agriculture based economies or who have had a recent flood of people coming to the cities from the country side looking for work.
Spitting was quite common in the USA 100 years ago and now mainly confined to small towns in the country.
People who don't spit simply swallow what they would have spit. Or if that is an issue they use the bathroom.
This is a similar problem to urinating on the streets, which was also common in the USA 200 years ago when most cities were small towns and it was easier to be discrete and there were no clean bathrooms available.

Because if they spit in the street they could get hit by a car. Same with railroad tracks, only with a train.

This is true and my oldest son has a habit of doing it (he's 26 and a bad a***). I guess if you look at it this way......it's better than getting spit in your face......

I love to watch Baseball (Tigers) and am really disgusted to see them spitting especially with the camera up in their face.
