Find out what the statute of limitations is in your State for this type of offense. You MAY be able to go to court and have it dismissed. The police will not drop it on their own.
If the statute of limitations doesn't apply and you were speeding, you should pay the fine. When you do, ask the clerk if you still need to go to court, or if the case will be dismissed now that the fine is paid.

Go to court. Look the judge in the eye and say, "Your Honor, I would like to mount a vigorous defense in this matter. However, I don't think I can testify truthfully to the Court as I have difficulty remembering what I was doing five days ago, never mind five YEARS. That said, I would ask the Court to dismiss the charge."
Then shut up and listen. Could save you a hundred bucks.

of coarse...the odds in this case will not be against you...1 the cop still has to show up, and remember what the sitation was written for. 2 you might get granted a staute of limitation. most states its 7 yrs...in ur case if its a minor ticket..they will drop it...u pay court cost.

most often if the ticketing officer doesn't show up in court they dismiss or reduce the violation. because it is so old i doubt the officer would show up in court. it is worth it if you have the time, however if you are taking time off work to go it may cost you $100 in lost wages. your call, good luck.

heck yeah, go to court! If they couldn't settle this matter in a more timely fashion, thats their unresponsible action. I'm sure any judge in their right mind would let you off in a heart beat, sure to be ticked when they see how badly THAT ball was dropped!
