honestly, it depends on the DIRSUP Command.

In Yokosuka, Japan, for instance, in the early 2000s, you were assigned to a specific platform. period. When the MCCAIN got underway, for instance, you went too, if they needed you. Not every underway required the same complement of CTxs. BUT you had the same Chief and DIVO no matter what, so you had the continuity. But other commands do things differently, and you could end up going out all the time, or never. neither of which is a good thing. You need the underway experience, but not so much you are never home.

With NSGAs going away and turning into NIOCs, and a lot of restructuring, DIRSUP has undergone a lot of changes recently.

PCS afloat gives you the chance to earn ESWS a little bit easier, plus take on collateral duties, which are always nice come eval time.
