I can't get off this menu. Some options cause immediate reboot. Sometimes I get the windows logo screen, then it restarts.

I should have stated, I'm a volunteer for a non-profit and trying to help on a problem PC. I haven't been able to find any app software CDs for this system so I'm trying really hard NOT to reload Windows. I know that would fix it.

From what you're describing it sounds like somehow your Windows got corrupted. Take your computer to a local mom-n-pop computer store, have them attempt to back up any important data, and then reinstall Windows.

i had this problem too.
was the BIGGEST pain in the *** i have EVER had in the history of computing.

unfortunately, i had 2 reinstall windows.
now the problem with that is that u lose all ur files.

if u dont mind that, then get ur windows XP cd, put it in, make sure ur computer boots the cd BEFORE the hard disk

*do this by checking the BIOS by pressing a certain button (the computer will show u this button when u see the brand name of ur computer is shown)*

then follow the on screen instructions on how to format the disk and install windows.

OTHERWISE

if u dont want 2 lose ur files then u should try wut i did:

get an external hard disk that will fit all of ur files on it *keep in mind that u CANNOT backup most programs so im afraid theyre pretty much history*

get a Live version of Linux *id recommend Knoppix, Suse, Ubuntu or Fedora* (Live just means u dont need 2 install the operating system and it loads and runs from the CD)

once again make sure the computer boots from the CD FIRST

then open Linux and copy ur files to the external hard disk, and reinstall windows like i said before.

if u need any more help email me on:
ill_never_tell_u@hotmail.com

i hope this helps!
and trust me, i know how u feel!

good luck!!!

ps. in respnse to the first question, i took my computer to MANY shops *approx. 15* in my area and they ALL said "i can put windows back on but ill delete all ur files"
so be careful

The problem is difficult to troubleshoot. You know there's corrupt system files, you just don't know which ones are corrupt , so as others have stated you pretty much have to reinstall Windows

You probably don't want to hear this, but have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Windows?

Either your Windows installation is corrupted or your hard disk has failed.
