Lazy Americans

In the last couple of years, I've had the privilege of working with a lot of college students in various career mentoring programs, and one thing has always stood out at me.
Probably about two thirds or more of the applications for NYSSA's SEMI Program come from either immigrants to this country or children of immigrants. Now, I know that's generally not reflective of the general NYC college student population, so, a disproportionately large percentage of the foreign students are taking advantage of this great opportunity.
I asked one student about this and he told me that education and opportunity is the only reason that he was here--it was the only reason his whole family came here in the first place.
What's really obvious to me is that a lot of the native born students here are simply going to get steamrolled by competition like that... and as well they should be.
So maybe instead of closing the borders, we should be trying to figure out how we can get the people that are here as motivated as the people trying to come here.

Comments from people regarding this article.
I think the problem is, students are being spoonfed too much both at home and in schools. Everything is dumbed down early on from school material to forms of entertainment to the arms, and children get so used to being bored and not caring, not trying to overcome a challenge, that they grow up extremely unmotivated.

Yep, how we can get the people that are here as motivated as the people trying to come here? Excellent question!

you know, that's very true. Most Americans say that immigrants or mexicans are stealing their jobs. The truth is, an employer will not choose an immigrant over an American. The employer is risking his business by hiring an illegal but somehow they still hire them. A good businessman hires a hard-working person, not just a Mexican, chinese, black, or white. If i was an employer, I wouldn't hire an illegal over an American, I would hire whoever was hardest-working, I dont care where they come from, as long as they make my business succeed. Many Americans just can't face the competition so they claim their jobs were stolen.

Americans are lazy, is that the typical answer to try and justify the Mexicans breaking the law and coming where they are not wanted, The Mexicans will be lazy till the day they die, everybody work's hard at their job, but what really takes work in changing a country, which they have no stomach for, or no brains to do that with. Even their politicians are to lazy to change their country. And it has been that way for 150 years, so don't call Americans lazy they built this country into a Nation of opportunity and freedom, and the greatest constitution in the world. And the article was bogus.

When I was a kid, if we saw stuff made in Mexico, it was usually cheap junk that didn't last a day. No lie. Back then, it was said that Mexicans were lazy. So now it's Americans, huh? Well, generalities come from ignorance, repeat, ignorance.
Why are you so worried about education when jobs which require education are exported too? When you surround yourself with people who are privileged enough to go to college, and you go to college, you probably don't know anything about how the lower half lives. You need to get off your soapbox, and understand that Americans pick up trash, mow lawns, do roadwork, clean houses, work in every kind of lousy, crappy job as well as everyone else. Do you?

OK I was already to get mad over this question, but I didn't I can agree alot of young people in high school and college are lazy. They have had most if not all handed to them with out having to work for it.
That's the bad news, The good news most grow out of it when the college days are over and the real world hits them in the face. They find out that the boss doesn't really care if some thing is hard to do or doesn't fit into there schedule.

I don't think the majority of Americans are lazy. I do think that a lot of people are raising their kids to be lazy. I don't think they are all doing it intentionally but as a college instructor, it is very difficult to get students to do to anything that is not copied, plagiarized, or dumbed down. This does not mean there are not other hard-working students out there. I have also encountered lazy foreign and immigrant students as well, so I don't think American students have the market cornered on laziness.

americans are not lazy, it is dumb to classify americans as lazy.
of course when you grow up somewhere, where hardcore back breaking jobs are your only options, then YOULL TAKE IT.
in central american countries, you dont have the options, if you have the chance to work at some nike factory that pays you a couple of cents an hour then you take it, cause you need to feed your children, your not gonna ask for unemployment, its either you take the dam job, or its el norte for you.

of course leaving out all the facts that if your in a WAR torn country you will leave your country to make a better life in the US.

its as simple as that for most of the immigrant you leave your country for a better chance at survival. its just common sence.

would i steal to feed my children, YES, SI, OUI, in a heatbeat. i wont give a f$%^ about anything when i see, the hunger in my childrens faces. i just hope you understand how long it would take me to decide whether to jump the border or not.
god bless the minutemen.

That's not a legitimate 'article', it is someone's personal website. They put what they want to in there. The fact is, ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IS AGAINST THE LAW.

USA Citizens are here legally. Illegal, undocumented people are not citizens.

It doesn't matter if every American was lazy, didn't go to school, didn't get a higher education or lived off welfare THEY ARE LEGAL CITIZENS. It is the concern of the USA to deal with them. It is not any of the ILLEGAL immigrants business what goes on in the USA. The USA will handle our own problems. ILLEGAL immigrants need to get their noses out of the USA's business and go back to [wherever]!! We don't owe illegal immigrants an education, health, a job or housing. GO F--ing HOME!!

I don't think that Americans are generally lazy. I believe that they do not value education as they should. Education seems to be a right rather than a privilege, as it should be. It is difficult to have a society were knowledge is readily available without some loss of appreciation and/or lack of motivation. Working smarter not harder is a good philosophy.

Here, here....thats an excellent point....IF you can't keep up with the competition, then thats just too bad....This is a capitalist country, that means, free enterprise. If you can do "it" better than someone else, the market will dictate that...Sorry, thats our system, love it, leave it!
