Why chocolate poisons dogs and how to treat chocolate dog
poisoning

While the pathetic begging look that goes across the face of a
dog wanting chocolate can weaken the most stoic dog owner, stay firm.

Do not give in. Ever.

Once dogs have tasted chocolate, they want more.

And for dogs, that's a bad thing.

You might disagree, thinking back to a time when you noticed a
dog enjoying a tidbit of chocolate with no deleterious effect.

Don't be fooled.

The problem, according to veterinary experts, is that eating a
speck of chocolate leads a dog to crave more. It can mean that your dog will jump at a opportunity to get any type of chocolate, not knowing that certain chocolates are more lethal than other types.

Larger amounts of chocolate, particularly of the most
toxic type, can bring about epileptic seizures in some dogs, and
in all dogs, can kill.

Poisoning of dogs by chocolate is not as uncommon as you might
think.

"Chocolate ingestions are one common reason why pet owners and
veterinarians call us," said Dana Farbman, Certified Veterinary Technician and Manager, Client and Professional Relations, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

"However, it would be difficult to verify an exact ranking in frequency of calls, as the types of substances we receive calls on can vary greatly depending on many factors, including the time of year. We generally do experience somewhat of a rise in chocolate calls around holidays, such as Halloween, Easter, Christmas, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.

It depends. Chocolate can be poisonous in large amounts but it depends on the dogs size.

The toxic dose is generally 100-150 milligrams per kilogram. Most chocolate contains from 40 to 140 milligrams per ounce of theobromine. So a 20 lb dog can eat approximately 1,000 milligrams or 10 ounces of chocolate before he will exhibit toxic signs.

If your dog or cat has ingested chocolate, the signs will normally show up within 12 hours -probably less- of ingestion. The pet may exhibit nervousness and trembling, vomiting and diarrhea, excessive thirst and or urination, muscle spasms, seizures and possibly coma.

Were they good cherries? Cause I love those thing and I am very jealous, of your dog right now. I'll get over it though. I think your dog is gonna get a stomach ache. No one/dog should eat so many sweats, all at once. I once ate 3 - 7oz. solid chocolate Easter bunnies 2 milk choc. and 1 white choc. and I'll never do that again. I know now that 2 bunnies are, my my limit. Dogs can get worms from chocolate. Maybe you should take him/her to the veterinarian. If you can't afford it, then look at your doggies doo-doo and check it out. If there are little worms squirming around, then you need to get some pills for your dog.I think it could die from it too. OH YEAH , STAY AWAY FROM YOUR DOGS BUTT, cause he/she will probably be stink'n the joint out.

Chocolate is bad for dogs. Call your vet right away!

Once my cat atre almost an entire chocolate bar. They had me feed her hydrogen peroxide. They said it would either make her vomit it up, or it would come out the other end. And boy did it!! What a mess but she was okay.

I had a dog growing up who ate a whole candy bowl of homemade fudge and it didn't phase him at all.

To be safe- call your vet right way!

all types of chocolate is bad for dogs. Also no onions, cooked or raw, no raw garlic but cooked is ok. No macadamia nuts, raisins or grapes - all toxic.
They can, however, eat a wide variety of other foods such as meat & poultry, salmon, pasta, veggies such as peas, asparagus, carrots, broccoli, and fruits such as watermelon, apples, apricots, plums, bananas - just give small bits at first to make sure it doesn't upset their stomach.
I often make my dogs a couple of chicken fillets combined w/ pasta, broccoli, & carrots.
When you give processed foods such as chicken and turkey, make sure it is low sodium, they should not have more than a small amount of sodium. Also fats should be monitored such as giving low-fat cheese as treats.- sim24

That's really bad.I would what him carefully over the next few days.Nothing but diaria could happen, but its known to do other bad things to .Remember if it doesn't hurt your dog this time it doesn't mean that he can handle chocolate.Things can happen later if your dog keeps getting it like allergic reaction or food poisioning or pancreatis.

It can be bad, some dogs react worse than others - our dog ate a tiny piece of brownie that fell on the floor, less than a teaspoon and was sick.
