Catholics are Christian ... the ORIGINAL Christians.
Catholics DON'T have idols.
Catholics worship one God who is Father, Son (Jesus), & Holy Spirit.
Catholics DON'T worship the Virgin Mary... we honor her as Jesus honors her.
The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus (God the Son) in 33 A.D.
Every non-Catholic Church was founded by some human a long time after Jesus rose from the dead.

Well first of all most Catholics will tell you that they were the first Christian church and Peter was the first pope(historically no record), though it was the apostolic church which was first and most of those followers were killed off by the roman government.
The real litmus test is you are a Christian if you follow the teachings of Christ and believe the only way to the father is through him. In Catholisms, they support the Bible but also support the traditions of their church and traditions always has greater precedence over the bible. In fact, for most of its history it made it illegal for anyone to have a bible and killed people who did(the dark ages) so that they could pick and choice what parts of Christianity they wanted people to know about. This is why there are so many odd beliefs and practices in the Catholic church. This is also what lead to the protestant reformation.
Now having said that there are many Catholics who are good and will be saved because God will not judge them by what they did not know. But if a Catholic refused to learn the truth and move forward biblically, then God will judge them accordingly.

All Catholics are Christians. Not all Christians are Catholics.
Catholics recognize the Pope as the infallible leader of the church when it comes to spiritual guidance.
The Roman Catholic Church is the original church started by Jesus the Christ, The Son of God. All other churches have been started by men.
Catholics do not have idols but there are a fair number of statues in the Catholic Church which are never worshiped directly but are rather representative of those that have gone before us and are now in the presence of God in heaven.

Identity of God
“The Trinity is the term employed to signify the central doctrine of the Christian religion.”—The Catholic Encyclopedia (1912), Vol. XV, p. 47.
“Neither the word Trinity, nor the explicit doctrine as such, appears in the New Testament . . . The doctrine developed gradually over several centuries and through many controversies.”—The New Encyclopædia Britannica (1976), Micropædia, Vol. X, p. 126.
“There is the recognition on the part of exegetes and Biblical theologians, including a constantly growing number of Roman Catholics, that one should not speak of Trinitarianism in the New Testament without serious qualification. There is also the closely parallel recognition on the part of historians of dogma and systematic theologians that when one does speak of an unqualified Trinitarianism, one has moved from the period of Christian origins to, say, the last quadrant of the 4th century.”—New Catholic Encyclopedia (1967), Vol. XIV, p. 295.
Celibacy of the clergy
Pope Paul VI, in his encyclical Sacerdotalis Caelibatus (Priestly Celibacy, 1967), endorsed celibacy as a requirement for the clergy, but he admitted that “the New Testament which preserves the teaching of Christ and the Apostles . . . does not openly demand celibacy of sacred ministers . . . Jesus Himself did not make it a prerequisite in His choice of the Twelve, nor did the Apostles for those who presided over the first Christian communities.”—The Papal Encyclicals 1958-1981 (Falls Church, Va.; 1981), p. 204.
1Â Cor. 9:5, NAB: “Do we not have the right to marry a believing woman like the rest of the apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas?” (“Cephas” is an Aramaic name given to Peter; see John 1:42. See also Mark 1:29-31, where reference is made to the mother-in-law of Simon, or Peter.)
1 Tim. 3:2, Dy: “It behoveth, therefore, a bishop to be . . . the husband of one wife [“married only once,” NAB].”
Before the Christian era, Buddhism required its priests and monks to be celibate. (History of Sacerdotal Celibacy in the Christian Church, London, 1932, fourth ed., revised, Henry C. Lea, p. 6) Even earlier, the higher orders of the Babylonian priesthood were required to practice celibacy, according to The Two Babylons by A. Hislop.—(New York, 1943), p. 219.
1 Tim. 4:1-3, JB: “The Spirit has explicitly said that during the last times there will be some who will desert the faith and choose to listen to deceitful spirits and doctrines that come from the devils; . . . they will say marriage is forbidden.”
CHRISTIAN MEANS CHRISTLIKE, JESUS SAID, Moreover, do not call anyone YOUR father on earth, for one is YOUR Father, the heavenly One. ,(MAT 23:9)

Catholics were in fact the first Christians. The distinction only came about with the birth of Protestantism with Martin Luther.
Catholics do not have idols, but they do ask saints to pray to God on their behalf. This is one of the points of conflict when Luter posted the 95 Theses in Germany. He did not approve of saints, decorating churches, or indulgences. That's basically why Protestants, Lutherans, or Calvinists don't do those things.

catholics put emphasis on mary and saints, the other denominations don't. most other denominations look only to christ and god.
if christ came out of the belly of a cow, catholics would be gullible enough to worship cows. the vessel is irrelevant. as far as the saints go, they were just people like the rest of us. there is no reason to iconize them. all that crap only takes the focus away from the miracle of christ, his teachings, his miraculous deeds here on earth, and his resurrection & ascention.
odd, how they're always the first party to cry heresey. did you know that when the first dinosaur fossils were found, the catholic church tried to cover it up and call it heresey because there is no mention of them in the bible? catholics are responsible for the crusades, and also the spanish inquesition. it's sad that all christions get blamed for the misdeeds of the catholics.
ok, hold on a minute. now that i've read some of these other answers, i have a few comments to add.
#1. the pope is NOT infallable! he is a man, take him for all in all. he is just as prone to sin as the rest of us. only jesus was in fallible.
#2. jesus DID NOT start the roman catholic faith! jesus wasn't a roman. he was nazareen. the roman catholic faith came to be almost two hundred years after his death. the first religion of cgristianity were the gnostics who were quickly killed off because of their heretical belief that the common man could converse directly to the almighty and no priests were needed. gnostics were of the belief and practice of worshiping outdoors and refused to build temples and churches because they preached that salvation was free and was not to be contained by a dwelling

Catholism is Christianity mucked up with pagan rituals and idol worship stemming from the Roman days. It IS NOT Christianity anymore... for this reason. The Bible says if you repent and ASK GOD to forgive you He will. The Bible DOES NOT say confess your sins to a priest so he can ask God to forgive you -- oh yeah, and then say 50 hail marys and give 10 dollars to the catholic church for penance and then you'll be forgiven.

All catholics are christian, but not all christians are catholic.
Christian is a blanket term for anyone who uses the bible as the basis of their religion. How they use and interpret it is where your differences arise.
Catholics, don't neccesarily have idols. They pray to Mary, the mother of Jesus, for strength and guidance, but don't claim she's divine. Saints are reverred, but not worshipped, as being godly in their ways and deeds. Its more convoluted, but that's the general gist of it. Other branches of Christianity claim that its idoltry because you should only pray to/worship God and Jesus.

Catholicism like most religion have beliefs that were generated by man not God. They practice theologies and dogmas that they say are dictated direct to them by their popes or higher ups.
Christianity is a reality. This means that a person that accepts Jesus Christ as Saviour, and repents, willing to allow the Holy Spirit of God to lead them throughout the rest of their life will be blessed through this faith.
God has given us His Word ( Jesus Christ ) to comfort us. The best translation of His Word is the King James 1611 Version together with the Strong's Concordance to verify.
