Ringworm is spread by either direct or indirect contact. People can get Ringworm by direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or pet. People can also get Ringworm indirectly by contact with objects or surfaces that an infected person or pet has touched, such as hats, combs, brushes, bed linens, stuffed animals, telephones, gym mats, and shower stalls. In rare cases Ringworm can be spread by contact with soil.

You can get ringworm from touching another person who is infected. Or from using items such as clothes, towels, or hairbrushes that were used by someone with a ringworm infection. Using common areas like gyms, shower stalls, and floors if used by someone with ringworm.
You can catch ringworm from touching a pet or animal or from coming into contact with the hair or dander of an infected animal. Dogs and cats, as well as farm animals can be infected with ringworm. Often this infection looks like a patch of skin where fur is missing.
The spores of dermatophyte fungi are extremely hardy in the environment and can live for years. All that is necessary is for the skin contact with a spore to cause infection. Infected animals are continuously dropping spore covered hairs. Some animals are carriers, who never show signs of skin irritation themselves but can infect others readily.
There are several species of dermatophyte fungi. Different species of fungi come from different kinds of animals or even from soil thus determining the ringworm species can help determine the source of the fungal infection.
Some kinds of Ringworm live on damp surfaces, like the floors on public showers or locker rooms. This is one the most common method of contracting ringworm, the second most common is from pets.
Some people are at greater risk from ringworm than others. The fungus takes advantage of those with reduced immune capacity. Young animals and children, elderly people, those who are HIV+, people on chemotherapy or highly stressed people and animals are at high risk.
Athletes participating in contact sports, such as wrestling and football, are at higher risk for contracting ringworm.

Although the world is full of yeasts, molds, and fungi, only a few cause skin problems. These agents are called the dermatophytes, which means "skin fungi." Skin fungi can only live on the dead layer of keratin protein on top of the skin. They rarely invade deeper into the body and cannot live on mucous membranes, such as those in the mouth or vagina.

My derm. said that it can rub of animals (usually dogs) onto you. It can also be rubbed off of them onto furniture or carpeting then onto you. If you have it you can just go to the derm. and they will give you a prescription ointment for it. Or, you could go to a local drug store and get some cheap antifungal for it too.
