Gradually (done by mixing a little into his old food for about 5 days until all the food is the new food) change Domnick's food to a "low fat" cat food such as Science Diet's indoor cat adult or Light Adult or Hairball Controll Light Adult. Gradually changing will help your cat adjust without stomach problems such as vomitting or diarrhea.
If Domnick is extremely fat or has other health issues please talk with you vet to see what low fat diet he/she recommends.
Good luck
Remember cats don't fair as well as dogs when they are overweight. So I commend you on taking the situation in hand and try to get it under control. Kudos!

By all means put him on a diet! But check with a veterinarian first. Obesitity in cats can mean more than just overeating and not getting enough exercise. My aunt has a fat cat and has to give him daily injections for a special condition he has. But generally, cats do need exercise - try to play with your cat daily and/or give him cat toys to keep him occupied. And don't just keep filling his food bowl as some cats will eat until it is empty whether they need it or not. Cats will generally let you know when they are hungry. If your cat is lethargic, he's not getting the exercise he needs and probably needs to see the vet.

I definitely agree with macleod709. Have the cat checked first then cut back on his food gradually. Also, try and get him to play more active games like jumping after a string tied to a stick. My cats love the toys that have a bunch of feathers attached to a string on a stick. They take turns jumping and chasing it.

How old is your cat and how much does he weigh. What do you fed him wet or dry catfood. If he is a male cat they generally get alot bigger then a female cat. Cut his cat food down. You may have to take him in to the vet and he would decide what`s best for your cat.

first get the cat checked out at the vet to make sure it's healthy and there isn't a medical reason for it to be fat. as long as your cat is healthy then decrease his food intake by 10%. if cats loose weight too fast it screws up his liver.

Cut down your cat's food intake and let your cat roam freely. Cats are born to be hunters, so they need to get out for the least.

Make sure he has all the water he wants, but feed him only a good nutritious low-cal cat food. Don't give him any people-food treats, though he'll probably beg for them.
Good luck!
