They can't. I guess you have to choose.

There are cat bath wipes that make it really easy to bathe a cat frequently - even daily. You can get them at Petsmart or Wal-Mart in multi-packs for a few dollars. They even have some especially to remove dander and other allergens. You can warm them in the microwave for 15 seconds and the cat will love it. There's no water and no rinsing required.
If your cat goes outside, your wife is probably allergic to the pollen and stuff she drags in. Wipe the cat down every time she comes in from the yard.

Well I am not a big fan of medicine... BUT, my mom is also allergic to cats (and dogs) yet she has two cats that are inside AND outside, and 5 dogs (1 inside and 4 outside)... you have to air out the house, select only one or two rooms the pets are allowed in (bedrooms are out!).
Restrict them... close the bedrooms doors or something. This limits what areas are 'contaminated' :P
Also, try to have them inside and outside. If you live in the city this may be harder to do... but their are ways. Slowly people do adjust to their allergies. So...

vaccuum the house a lot and use arm and hammer powder you put on the carpet with pet hair releaser. and make sure you vaccuum your furnature, keep the bedroom or at least a room cat free, don't let the cats in there, make sure you clean that room very well. vaccuum maybe 2-3 times a week to start with and get an air purifier. have her talk to her doctor about zyrtec, that works well for my boyfriend who is allergic to cats and we have 2 cats.

My son is allergic to his wife`s cats. He takes allergie medications for it. I think it`s called allergo. He gets the script from his dr. He also bought a air purifer for his bedroom made by honeywell and he runs that on a timer. Guess he and his wife is happy nobody now has to leave home.....

What Macleod said. Keep the house very clean, and see a doctor about allergy treatments for your wife.
If that doesn't work, the cat will have to go: This is your wife we're talking about, after all, much as I hate to say it.

See if an allergy prescription will do the trick, tell your doctor about the allergy to the cat. If that does not work, you may need to give the cat to a no kill animal shelter so they can find another home for it.

Your wife can get an allergy med prescibed by her doctor, this will help as long as she does not pick the cat up or let the cat sleep on her clothes and bed especially not her pillow. My cat raced me to my bed so he could sleep on my pillow.

Usually people are allergic to cat's hair. Clean a lot, remove carpets and use hardwoods and she can take medication against allergy.

Cat outside. When she's not home he could stay in a back room. Before she comes back you could clean the house of hair.
