IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO BE TREATED FOR DEPRESSION BY YOUR REGULAR DOCTOR,AS MOST REGULAR DOCTORS DO NOT KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATION TO PRESCRIBE THEM EFFECTIVELY. ALSO SEEING A THERAPIST (COUNSELOR) AND GETTING INTO THERAPY SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE PRIMARY COURSE OF TREATMENT IN YOUR TREATMENT PLAN. CALL YOUR LOCAL MENTAL HEALTH CENTER AND ASK FOR AN EVALUATION OR ASK YOUR DR. FOR A REFERRAL TO A PSYCHIATRIST. IF YOU SPEAK WITH HIS SECRETARY TELL HER YOU NEED TO SEE HIM FOR A REFERRAL. END OF STORY . BEST OF LUCK TO YOU. TRY TO FIND OUT ABOUT SUPPORT GROUPS IN YOUR AREA.

I'm a receptionist at a doctor's office we really are rather nice a swear and we take every seriously.

When you call just tell us what's going on in your own word's. We don't mean to get in your business when we ask you what is going on when you call we are just trying to see when we need to have you seen by the doctor (ie is it an emergency). You do have a right not to totally disclose you do understand. Just remember we are there to help you. That is our job. We dont' talk about you the patient behind your back when you're off the phone.

Like any other job out there we are very professional. Just call and make the appointment with your doctor's office. They will treat you warmly and they will see you as soon as they can. At least that what they should do.

You don't have to tell them you are there for depression if you want to be private just say i need to discuss some things with the doctor and ask for the half hour slot if you want a longer time slot with the doctor. The secretary won't think anything bad if you say you are being seen for depression, I work at a clinic and we take lots of those calls every day, you are not alone.

Tell them why you need to be seen. It requires a certain amount of trust in the agency, in that the secretary, like all the other staff, is expected to maintain confidentiality and behave professionally.

Don't let this kind of concern keep you from seeking help if you need it.

Good luck!

I know it's hard to be questioned by a stranger - secretary, when you're feeling depressed, but honesty is always best. Just spit it out to her. Good Luck - depression ain't fun - it hurts. Been there.

The reason they ask is so they can schedule you for the appropriate amount of time. However, if you just state "personal issue I wish to only speak to Dr about" and let them know the regular appt time (usually 10 - 15 min) is sufficient.

I wouldn't be embarrassed to say you need help with possible depression, there are worse things you could have.

Perhaps tell her or him you need to make an appointment for a behavior problem, or emotional crisis.

State depression consultation...or, if you are like myself, and value your privacy...just say a checkup. I hate it when you go to the doctor's office, waiting room is full...you sign in...and some idiot working there..yells out..."What are we seeing you for today???"---Thnaks to tougher privacy laws...it is not as commonplace now, but still exists.
