Be careful dealing with shops in the so-called camera district. Not all of them are ethical. Things to watch for:
-- Merchandise not imported by the manfacturer's U.S. distributor. It does not have a valid U.S. warranty. Just look at the warranty cards.
-- "Stripped" cameras. You want the strap and the battery? That's extra, they tell you. No, it isn't.
-- Hard sell on accessories you don't want or need, particularly extended warranties.
-- Bogus packages with cheap bags and filters.
Do some price shopping. Ask friends where they've bought and whether they were satisfied. Don't deal with some fly-by-night crook to get $2 off the price. Remember that deals that seem too good to be true probably ARE too good to be true.
If you're looking for consumer gear and are confident enough to make your choice without a lot of help from a salesperson, any of the reputable discount outlets would be fine. If you aren't sure of yourself, go to a store that specializes in photo gear, where the staff tends to be older and a lot more expert than the kids in Best Buy and CompUSA. You might pay a few dollars more, but it's usually worth it for the advice.
Good luck. Photography is great fun.

Adorama is the most reputable of the discount camera dealers in NYC. Not the cheapest, but they do sell for a lot less than many competitors. They have also been around alot longer than some stores and have a very large inventory.
