Generally, gifts that are multiples of Chai are considered to be auspicious, as Chai is both the word 'life' and the number 18 in Hebrew. If it's not a family member, generally $36 would be considered appropriate... less is acceptable if you're more distant, and more, of course, if you're a lot closer!
