With all the controversy in the past about what televangelists do with the huge amounts of cash they receive, why do people still donate?

The saddest part of all is that it is usually older people who do this. People that are trying to live on their small social security checks. Because they were brought up in a time when they were taught to believe that you don't question the man at the pulpit, God talks to him, and you have to give him more money to spread the word to more people so you can go to heaven. It isn't ignorance, it's innocence.

The question SHOULD be: WHY are these rip off artist still on TV, taking money from our grandparents, that can barely afford to feed themselves?

Because some televangelists are prophets from God, and some are not. The Bible says that we can judge them by thier fruit. If you see a guy with a sequined jacket and a rolex, HELLO!... red flag people!!!! But on the other hand, look at Billy Graham. You can see where your money goes. He humble and a man of God.
..."See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ' I am He,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not go after them. Luke 21:8
Beloved,do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out in the world. 1 John 4:1

As long as there are suckers there will be televangelists, for a fool and his money are easily parted.

Why dont they do something really worthwhile with their money and donate to a real charity where it can go to better use than funding the lifestyle of a con artist????!!!

Well, I guess part of it is that there are all these new people popping up all the time, and the public want a promise they can keep and believe. They will be willing to pay for the feeling that they have helped/got a personal prayer/got a candle lit for them.

I suppose a simple way of putting it that people will try to buy their way to god.

one word.....desperation.

When people are down, they're at their weekest, and televangelists prey on that. They know exactly what to say to get the most desperate people to donate money.

The organisations regularly have fresh celebrities to keep the 'interest' or loyalty. These celebrities are desparate for more cash and already own the fans.

Supporting a preaching mission is a devotional activity, but there must be discrimination as to which is valid, wealth shouldn't be distributed foolishly.

With all the warnings available in the press and on the web why do they still give their details to spammers? Or vote politicians in for a second term? Dunno. Maybe everyone thinks 'this time it'll be different'.
