As a chef there a few tips, some of which have been posted here but one that is missing is when you cut your Onions use a very sharp knife. A blunt knife only breaks the layers of the onion and you will get the fine spray ( which is an acid) which irritates your eyes. Wearing protective eye wear or small swimming goggles does help. You could even use a mandolin but be aware as they are often razor sharp and the last thing you want in the finger bowl is a finger LOL!

First put onion in the refridgerator after purchase.
Turn on fan and place to your side cut cold onion on cutting board with sharp knife.
The sulfur in the gaseous odor released during the cutting process causes you to tear. A sharp knife and cold onion helps to reduce some of the gas and the fan takes care of the rest.

I only buy "sweet" onions such as Spanish (red) or Vadalia. The sweet varieties have far less of the sulpher compound that irritates the eyes than the common yellow onions. I cook with sweet onions all the time with nary a tear. Great in salads, too. Try them.

Burn a candle while chopping the onions, making sure you cut the growing end off completely before chopping. Good Luck and remember to use a really sharp knife

Hold a teaspoon in your mouth while you do it. Breathing through your mouth has its advantages sometimes. Afterwards, wash your hands under running cool water and rub with a stainless steel teaspoon or 'magic stone' to remove the smell.
Or do what I do and buy frozen chopped onions, or spring onions.

After you peel off the outer layers, run the onion under "COLD" water while cutting through the middle. Once you get through that first slice, you're home free...

My father bought a small fan that I use. The fan blows the fumes away from my face, and cutting onions is a breeze (pun intended).

put them in the freezer for about 15 minutes before you start. It's also better to breathe through your mouth when cutting, rather than your nose. It stops some of the fumes going up as far as your eyes.
