For $35, you can get one at the dog pound that already bites, barks all day or never got housebroken.

For $250 - $1000, you can get one from a pet store that came from a puppy mill or puppy farm. It will have papers, but there's no way of knowing if they're valid. There are some people who try to breed them even smaller and call them "teacup" dogs - that's a fancy way of charging a higher price for a dog with more health problems.

For $1000 - $1800, you can get a top quality dog from a great breeder who really cares about their puppies and the people who buy them.

Don't get a dog just because it's "cute" - you have to be able to live with its behavior!!! (Just look on this site and see how many people are complaining that their toy dogs are not housebroken and never stop barking!) Are you sure you really want a Chihuahua? All small dogs are harder than average to housebreak - small dogs have small bladders and need to go out about every four hours. Many tiny dogs tend to be spoiled, yappy little ankle-biters if they're not raised properly. My cousin used to breed them - you could visit there for eight hours and they NEVER shut up! They tend to be fragile and easily stepped on - a broken leg in a Chihuahua can cost you a bundle for the delicate surgery. They are not ornaments to show off in a Prada shoulder bag - they are living breathing animals that need care and training. If you get one from a really good breeder and raise it properly, you can have a great dog.

Find a good breeder referral by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows.

You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money. The best breeders will be members of their breed club, promoting healthy dogs with great temperaments. They should ask you a bunch of questions to make sure their puppy will be getting a good home. If all a "breeder" seems to care about is whether your check will clear, you can be sure he won't care a week later when the pup is dying from distemper or parvo and you want your money back.

Whatever you do, DON'T go to a pet shop, a flea market or buy one sight-unseen off the Internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are often kept in deplorable conditions - spending their entire lives in small wire-bottomed cages. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there.

These so-called "breeders" have now figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.

The question involves so many variables. I raise Chihuahua's.
My prices are never set in stone. In all my ads I place an estimate, such as between $600.00 and $900.00.
If the buyer has purchased a puppy from me in the past, naturally I give them a discount. If they have a friend that gets a puppy from me I may also give them a discount, especially if I know both dogs are going to be around each other. I love keeping up with my "sold" puppies.
It will also depend of what size the buyer wants. A standard size Chihuahua weighs 5 to 6 lb. Some of the smaller ones will be in the 3 to 4 lb range, you will also find the larger ones that will weigh above 9 lb.
The dog's adult weight is often a determining factor in cost. The smaller a dog will be, the longer a breeder will have to provide food and vet care for them. The larger, stronger puppies can be released at a much younger age, thus can be sold for a smaller amount.
Destination is a factor. If the new owner can drive across town to pick up the puppy it will be a lot cheaper than a puppy I have to prepare to ship across country.
People do not realize it cost an average of $250.00 to get a dog ready to ship, and that is for a dog that weighs less than 9lb. That is a fee that is set by the airlines and the breeder has no say in the fee.
Then there is the matter of bloodlines, if you choose a puppy that is the product of Champion showdogs you can expect to pay much more than you will for a puppy where someone just slung two dogs together in their back yard and produced a litter.
Color is also a factor, I do not consider any color to be rare, due to the simple fact that Chihuahua dogs come in every color and pattern ever made. Granted some colors are not seen as often as others. Most people consider the blue (gray) to be a rare color. I have the blue gene in the background of many of my stock, so I have blue puppies all the time, so for me it is just another color.
Then you have health guarantees, to me this is the most vital aspect of a purchase. If you pay $300.00 for a dog and it dies 2 weeks later.......or you pay $900.00 for a dog and the breeder guarantees them for a year. The choice is the buyers.
It all comes down to what the buyer is willing to pay, how soon they want the puppy and how extensive a search they are willing to make.

Well a puppy mill will cost you a lot of money your best price would be a breeder or a rescue that would be the least costly.. I have 3 puppies my chihuahua had and we are not charging because they are like kids so we do not believe in selling them so maybe someone will do the same..and our Chihuahua's are pure bred.good luck.

Lowest-Shelter you would be suprised how many pure breed animals are in shelters go to www.petfinder.com to find one near you most some with an adoption fee of no more than I'll say $200 unless it is some special breed rescue place and most places are loads less than that
The most would probally be $1000 $1500 at a breeder

I live in Ohio in Amish Country and the local Amish breeders have them for $100 or so. You can pay upwards of $2000 for one too so I guess it's all up to you!
