Nine living and one dead,
One flew out to get some bread,
To feed the living inside the dead.

One of the most common neck-riddles ,which describes young birds and their mother who are nesting in a horse's skull. The mother flies out of the horse's skull to feed the young birds.

Ten tongues in one head Nine living and one dead One flew forth to get some bread To feed the living in the dead (Goldberg 1993:81).

The term neck-riddle derives from the German Halslisungsratsel, literally "neck-saving riddle," a fitting name given that such riddles are almost always accompanied by narratives which tell of a prisoner who saves his neck by posing a riddle which the executioner cannot answer.
