My 14 year old cat purrs intermittently, cannot continue purring as he breathes in and it is bearly audible.
Could it be because he was taken from his mother at 6 weeks and that meant he didnt learn certain things from her?

. My Sunny purrs like a race car while Rommie has a quiet purr and when she's really happy adds little meows into the mix. My oldest, Cocoa, use to have a medium purr but now that he is older the only way to tell that he is purring is to feel it. My neighbor's use to have an outside cat that acted all tough and it took me months to get him to purr. Don't sweat it, different cats have different purrs. Just be glad your cat is happy enough to purr no matter how quiet it is.

Cats purr in different ways and it could mean different things. One of my cats purr ridiculously loud, while the other purrs almost never and very quietly. It is just that cats have there ways in purring and all of them are not the same.

i think it just depends on the cat.
When we first got Tupalo (our first) she was 6 weeks and didnt start purring until a month later!
With Dinah, (our newest) she purrs like a mad man.

I have had cats who I have never heard purr and my sisters cat sounds like a broken car. I think it just different with each cat...just like how we have different tones in our voice.

cats have different purrs, has this always been this way or is it something new. if it is something new get him to the vet if it is something that has always been going on then it's just the way your cat is.

a cat puring is almost like a human talking, it'll sound different, it depends on the cat, but if your really concerned, go to the vet and get it check out, it could be serious, or nothing
