Is it possible for my teenage nephew to have insomnia and if so what can cause this and what can we do at home to help this problem?

Insomnia has no real cause that can be determined.

Take him into the doctor for a real diagnosis.

It is certainly possible for a teenager to suffer from insomnia. He does need to be evaluated by a doctor. I have a friend who's had insomnia as long as she can remember. Many physical, emotional and psychiatric conditions manifest in the teen years. Also, it's just miserable to have to worry about not getting enough sleep.

1) Yes, every other day. 2) Yes, off and on. 3) I have had this problem since I was 11 years old. I just have trouble resting and falling asleep. It has not been from excess of caffeine or stimulants. My mind always seems to be 'going'. When I was in my 20's, there were times where I stayed awake 2-3 days in row! It drove my mom insane. But in the end, it benefited me then and now. I get twice as much housework done these days, I had no trouble with jobs that require a night shift, and it compliments my Goth lifestyle.

Yes, he could be suffering from insomnia. The cause might be anything from poor sleep hygiene to stress to a sleep disorder to being in a room that's too hot to sleep in. Have you asked him about it?

Please don't race to any conclusions about substance abuse or the like. Keep the lines of communication open first.

If he truly doesn't know what's going on, the next step would be a visit to the family doctor. If there's no help there, request a referral to a sleep specialist.

My daughter is 15 and has already had two sleep studies in her life. I'd be a poor excuse for a mother if I had assumed that she wasn't sleeping on my preferred schedule due to drugs or some such, when she actually has a sleep disorder.

Buy him some melatonin for an herbal solution. If that doesn't work, he may need a stronger prescription medicine to get him back on a sleep cycle. I think doctors are probably reluctant to put teenagers on things like Ambien, though, so definitely try the melatonin first. He could also try taking a Benadryl (or 2) about a half hour before bed. the active ingredient in Benadryl is the same thing that manufacturers put in things like Tylenol PM, Simply Sleep, Nytol, etc.

It's possible, and there are a lot of things that can lead to it.

Is your nephew in a troubled home or otherwise stressed out about something? Or has he gotten mixed up with drugs? Or has something else happened to mess up his biological clock?

By all means, talk with him about it if you can. A sleep specialist could help more, or some other doctor if there is something physically wrong.

Many things could cause a teenager to have insomnia. Anxiety, normal hormonal changes, irregular sleeping patterns (not going to bed and getting up at about the same time every day) , drug or alcohol use, etc. You need to find out what's causing his problems before you can address them.

stress, or what seems stressful to a teenager. its a matter of letting him get through it, he will eventually and wont be any worse off for it.

recent divorce,DRUGS(that was nephews problem recently)bully, having troble with his sexualty moving schools, abuse physcail,mental or sexually good luck whis you could lets us all know
