HI, I was wondering if any one could give me some information on putting a micro chip into a children for tracking purposes. Are there companies/hospitals in the US that do this and does any one know the risks of such a thing. Please any information anyone has would be great. Thanks in Advance for your time and answer. :)

Chipping, as identified by the more common term used in implanting a minature device within a pet, currently utilises a hand held scanner to identify the presence of the device. There is much discussion about utilising a device which can be used in conjunction with GPS for tracking purposes. One of the leaders in this technology and the research is the VeriChip maker Applied Digital Solutions (http://www.adsx.com/prodservpart/ verichip.html) who plans to demonstrate a prototype later this year of its Digital Angel, a small tracking device that can be implanted under the skin or attached to a wristwatch.

A theme park at Hyland Hills near Denver is using a localised tracking system availble for parents for renting called the Park Watch. Another product named Gotcha from the National Scientific Corporation (http://www.nsclocators.com/products/ gotcha.htm) based in Arizona has announced its intention to supply a portable device which will be appropriate for external use later this year.

Another area of research is with the use of mobile phones utilising the GPS infrastructure to locate the phone -- this would evidently require the telephone to be powered on and carried by the child.
There was an article published in The Times 3rd September 2002, which referred to a child who has had a chip implanted in her arm by Kevin Warwick (professor of cybernetics at Reading University) to allow her to be tracked by her parents at all times. There are other developments around both in the UK and the USA, but Professor Warwick's is the only one I know of that is based on micro chipping.
As far as I'm aware there is no current application that allows you to microchip your child as you would a dog or cat. However there have been recent articles from Dr Kevin Warwick of Reading University who is looking at doing what you mention to his daughter to demonstrate the benefits of such a thing; i.e. tracking children if they are abducted etc.

However there are devices for younger children that act as proximity devices; i.e. if they go more than 10m from their parents an alarm sounds -- now while this is great for younger children in a shopping centre/mall, it's of no use to a teenager who wants to be wandering around the streets with their friends. I suspect we'll be waiting 3-5 years to see anything of the kind your looking for and then no doubt there will be a serious amount of debate over the privacy and other issues surrounding devices that are implanted below the skin so that they can't be discarded easily.

I have never heard of micro chipping a person. I know that they do have these watches that the child wears and you can track them from your computer. If the watch is removed in any way other then with the key, police are automatically notified. They're pretty cool but kinda expensive.

I easily have under no circumstances heard of micro chipping someone. i do not forget that they do have those watches that the youngster wears and also you may song them out of your pc. If the watch is bumped off in any way different then with the most important, police are immediately notified. they're pretty cool yet kinda severe priced.

I didn't know they were doing it in children yet...I heard of it, but they were just debating the pros & cons...All my doggies have em :D I dunno if *I* would do it anyway, kinda too scientific & hightech (like aliens implanting chips or something). I would however give them a cell phone with GPS so I could track them LOL but I guess if they're younger than like 13 or something ya might not want them to have a cell phone *shrugs* I guess I would just watch them really good then, before 13 they shouldn't be out of your site (or without a responsible adult) anyway

As of right now, people are not implanting any devices as standard practice onto their children. Think about how big your cell phone is and how much you have to charge it. Would you really want to implant a device that same size into your child?

The best tracking device is: being a good parent.

Private companies have started doing this. I don't know any off hand, but you could find out if you do a little bit of research on the subject.

There have been controversial debates over it. My biggest fear is that if someone kidnapped the child or had evil intent, they would just cut it out. People are evil.
