What is the format for the draft? How does the government decide who goes on what day and if they qualify or not? Do a whole new group of people leave for the military on a single day or is it spread out over a longer period? And, if the draft goes on for 4 years or something like that, will everyone between the age requirements be considered/go into the military, and if so, for how long does one serve? Thanks.

The last draft (during vietnam) was in the form of a lottery.

The days of the year, from 1 to 366, were written on slips of paper and the slips were placed in plastic capsules. The capsules were mixed in a shoebox and then dumped into a deep glass jar. Capsules were drawn from the jar one at a time.

The first number drawn was 258 (September 14). Men of draft age whose birthday fell on the corresponding day of the year would all be drafted at the same time. A secondary lottery was also held on the same day, to construct a random permutation of the 26 letters of the alphabet. For men born on a given day, the order of induction was determined by the rank of the first letters of their last, first, and middle names.

If the draft continues on as it did from '69 ~ '73, not everyone will serve, but the order of draft would change as the lottery would be recast. Final induction depended on classification, need for troops, deferments, etc. A typical hitch was 4 years with one year in country.

There is no draft and it would take about 14 months to get it moving.

In a particular year (let's say 1985), all the 18-year-old names are placed into a fishbowl (it's figurative. It's all electronic.)

A day comes up (March 16) and a sortation number (43)

So, all those people born on March 16 are 43rd in line to be called up to the draft.

Depending on the need, they could draft as high as they could go.

When Vietnam was in full swing, my brother's number came up in 1968. He drew 333, but they were drafting up to 300.

Since the offices are already set up to start the draft if necessary, it would take only a few days to start the lottery and send out the first set of draft notices. For those of you who are resisters, there are 3 legal ways to dodge the draft. You can claim to be a conscientious objector, etc. The lucky ones, THE FORTUNATE SONS, what the Nam Vets called them were children of the rich and powerful. I say pull the draft now....give your locked in soldiers a break................one should only have to serve one tour of duty.............not year after year. Call your representatives today and tell them you want a draft so that all of you who have faith in the President and his war can show your commitment to his cause. Hell, why wait.......sign up now....the WAR MACHINE needs you.

In the old days your birthday was the basis for your number being called. If you got called up,you had a certain number of days to report for your physical. There were deferments, college student, conscientous objector, homosexual, health problems,
etc.
If you were deemed healthy enough to get killed in some foreign sh*thole, off you went, either army or marines,or you could avoid this by joining the Navy or having a rich daddy with political connections[see whitehouse today].

There hasn't been a draft for over 30 years.
You do still have to register upon your 18th birthday.
