That is so sad. But if you love her and you must or we would not be answering these questions.
Why don't you give her a gift certificate to weight watchers and walk with her in the evenings. Show her how to take responsibility for herself, her health, and her future. Don't allow her to let anyone get to define her.

If your niece is a little self-conscious about herself, you might want to talk to her and explain to her that it's a fairly common issue. Some people will do anything and go out of their way to put someone else down, especially if the person is a little overweight. If she is nervous, explain to her that it is alright to be. As long as she has a friend or a small group of friends she can associate with, she should do great. What I reccommend, is to take up a program with her. This doesn't have to be a "weight loss" program or anything like that. I'm referring to taking interest in something that could get her mind off the subject. Taking a nice nightly walk with a family member or a friend is excellent. Not only is her mind off of things, but you'd be surprised on how many calories you can burn by just walking. If you make it a tradition or a nightly thing, you might see some change in her and she'll feel more confident about herself. Once that happens, no matter what someone says, it won't bring her down. The key thing is to be involved too. She'd appreciate it since family never judges another family member by the way they look.
