1 Border Collie
2 Poodle
3 German Shepherd
4 Golden Retriever
5 Doberman Pinscher
6 Shetland Sheepdog
7 Labrador Retriever
8 Papillon
9 Rottweiler
10 Australian Cattle Dog

These purebred dogs rank as the smartest, but that doesn't mean you don't have to work at it. The smarter the dog, the smarter he may be at outwitting you. All dogs are work.

Another thing you might try is to get a mutt that's a combination of any of the two up here--hybrid vigor can add some genius points as well.

yes, my dog is very smart - he is a Jack Russell Terrier/Brittany Spaniel mix - he is 9 months old and can already sit, stay, lay down, sit up, bow, speak, shake hands, stand, wait at the door, and load up in the car amongst other things. Most of the smarter breeds of dogs lie in the terrier group, the retriever group and the herding group. ex - Labs, Border Collies, Jack Russells ect. I got a mix dog because you tend to get the best of both breeds.

VERY SMART Jack Russell Terrier--Almost too smart. When I went in to have my daughter we left her locked in the kitchen by putting a baby gate across the door. Well she couldn't jump that, but the smart *** pushed her crate/kennel over to the gate so she could jump on top of that and then jump out!! She knows lots of tricks and commands too. She loves to swim and loves her people. This breed is VERY intelligent, but as with most smarter breed dogs this makes them harder to train and it takes longer to do so. Also if you plan on having kids this breed is noted to not do well with small children. Our's has been an exception(thankfully).Be sure to do lots of research on breeds before settling on one.

My Boyfriend has a pitbull! Everyone seems to think they are bad dogs but if they are raised right they are the best dog out there! They have very human like emotions and personalities. Good Luck on whatever you get!

My dog is a mixed breed -- shepherd, chow and golden retriever. She is very smart and fiercely protective of her family. She definitely gets her point across when she communicates -- but she is also very loving. She is a wonderful addition to our family.

If you are looking for a very smart breed -- poodles are considered one of the smarter breeds.

To me all dogs are capable of learning things if the owner is willing to get up and teach them. Although I have trained my dog Java many things and she is very protctive of her family and doggy freind Ciara. In other words any dog can be smart if you teach them how to be.

I had a hyper min pin few years back, he was smarter then me. Now I have a shiba inu. He is calm, rarely barks, clean like a cat, smart(I thought him how to sit for only two times and he got it). He looks like he is thinking all the time...sometimes i think he is a dog philosopher...
