Generally speaking -no. It is very unprofessional for an emloyer to dicuss reasons for termination (be it voluntary or not). I'm in Canada, so I'm aware of Canadian laws about the separation of employment, but these laws vary from country to country, and provinces/states too.

Talk to your Human Resources Department about the issue if you are concerned. They need to know what is going on. You can meet them at a coffee shop so no one sees you at work.

Think about who you put down as a reference. If a potential employer contacts your previous employer, then they need to answer honestly, yet professionally. Also good employers are able to read between the lines, they know the key words to listen for when researching references.

So if you are aware that your previous employer and you may not have seen eye to eye, or had some issues, then maybe you need to look at possible alternatives as to who can vouch for you.

there are only certain questions that your employer can ask your previous employer. Usually, it can only be answered by Yes or No but still depends on the question.

Yes; they just can't tell any perspective employers who call about you. Then you have a lawsuit, if you can prove they trashed you.
