It contains a lot of sodium chloride (salt) which gives it a salty aftertaste, just like sweat.

These are all great answers, but I'd like to fill everyone in on the true "secret" of Gatorade.

I started drinking the stuff regulary since January, consuming about two quarts of it daily. Except on Sundays.

One night I dreamt that I was on a large basketball court. Much bigger than a normal one. In fact, it was so huge that I could only see one basket from where I was standing. There were all of these scientists standing around and they were all yelling at each other saying, "Why do the athletes get tired"

So they took Alonzo Mourning and put him in a rag wringer of some sort and rung him out creating the first Grape flavored drink. They found it replaced nutrients in other athletes so they marketed it as Gat-or-Ade. From the latin word "gatoradus" meaning tall, clumsy one.

It's really all pretty simple. It doesn't just taste like sweat. It tastes like Alonzo Mourning.

Because it has the minerals that you sercrete when you sweat. It actually is a lot like flavored sweat, loaded with potassium chloride, sodium chloride (table salt), and plenty of carbohydrates.

How can you people have never had sweat get into your mouth? Or eyes for that matter? Ever done any kind of manual labor? Exercise? Have you ever actually moved for that matter? People sweat! It happens. Grow up!

Gatorade tastes incredible when you're exercising and dehydrated...probably that's because that's the type of thing it's meant for, replenishing your electrolytes when you need them. And if you're dehydrated, anything with flavor with taste stronger, so you wont get a salty taste.

Maybe because it replaces what your body lost during sweating- electrolytes and minerals. It is just awful to me.

because of the fact they incorporate electrolytes. Electrolytes are specific salts that your physique desires (sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium). activities beverages should not be fed on instead for water, they have been meant for rehydration for the period of/after strenuous events. they're additionally good for rehydrating once you're ill.
