I do not have any information that would support an answer, whether in the positive or negative. I do remember seeing a news article about 4 years ago that a private firm would create a small rocket-propelled capsule (about 10ft long, I think). This capsule would be dropped from an external hardpoint on a specially-configured DC-10 or MD-11 and propel itself into the lower altitudes of space. That would be a very expensive way to scatter the ashes of a loved one. Again, I don't have any proof of whether this has actually happened or not.

Yes they are sending the remains of the actor who played Scottie on the original Star Trek to orbit the Earth until the remains decentergrate in the Earth's atmosphere. Doesn't NASA have better thing to do, like figure out where we'll going to live when the Earth's resources run out or something.

James Doohan chief engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott will have a few grams of his ashes blasted 70 miles into space this fall from southern New Mexico.
Gene Roddenberry "Star Trek" creator A Quarter Ounce of the ashes were launched into orbit around the Earth.
And if you want to go to the moon or space your self it will only cost 12,500$

I subscribe to several 'space" e-zines, including NASA, I've never heard of that. Perhaps a private company will offer "burial in space" kinda like the Neptune society, someday...there's another question, though, how would feel about being let go out there?

I think the technically correct answer is that NASA does not do this, but that there is a private company that does.
See the Space Services Inc link below for more information.

Actually, it was Scotty and several others, too. One was an astronaut, although I can't remember his name.
