Dells are quite good....
Toshiba and HP are the next good ones
Sony is very good too, but they're about $1000.
Acer is decent.
IBM also very good, but I don't know if you can get one for under $600 (by the way, they go under the name Lenova for laptops now a days)
Check out TigerDirect.com and newegg.com for good deals on all except Dell. for dell you have to go to dell.com
