Its like choosing to go to heaven or hell.. If you believe in Jesus and repent then you choose to go to Heaven.
Also the Bible says to be a doer of the word you must repent, If you believe in Jesus and keep doin sin then you are not forgiven.

Jesus was born from a virgin and lived perfectly, according to the Laws. He did what NO man could do and that is fulfill the Law. Many thought that when the Messiah came, he'd be a King on Earth. That would have been nice, but wouldn't help anyone in the end.
Jewish people were required to make sacrifices to God, usually at a temple. Those animals were to be free of blemish, or perfect. When Jesus was crucified on the cross, he sacrificed himself for all the sins of mankind. That is how you hear of the washing of sins. Some say with blood (which stands for a new covenant, but that's probably deeper then what you need).
Every human is sinful. Jesus was the only one who was perfect. Even the Pope is condemned by sin because he was born into it. Without Jesus dying on the cross, mankind has no out from sin. We are born condemned but with Jesus we have hope for eternal life.
Need more? Just ask. :)

The concept begins with understanding the Creator (God) is a uniquely different and set apart from man (Holy). In that God cannot be in the presence of sin, sin must be atoned for. When Adam & Eve Sinned and then had children the sin nature or the tendancy to sin was passed on. They believed a lie and broke faith or covenant with God. As punshment they were banned from God's fellowship. God promised them however, in future generations He would Himself provide a means of being reconciled (brought back into fellowship) to God. Later God established that without an atonement of blood, sin could not be forgiven. Knowing that we all would sin in some way or another. God set in motion a plan to provide a perfect sacrifice (not an animal that was not perfect.) to die and shed blood and become a sacrifice. By His own power Mary became pregnant with a child born from God. Jesus or (Yeshua) in hebrew lived a sinless, or perfect life, then died as a sacrifice for our sins by His shed blood.
Now our part is to accept these things by faith and accept Jesus as the savior of the world and personally for our own sin. That acceptance of the sacrifice allows all of your sins to be cleansed or taken away.
This does not give license to live any way we want and expect forgiveness because without the repentance or the turning away from lifestyles, actions, attitudes, etc... that are against what God has said is right, then there is no forgivness. You see if we do not have a change of heart we really did not accept the sacrifice in the first place. That said, there is still the understanding that we are weak humans. We will make mistakes, but as long as we really try to conform to God's way's then the forgiveness is forever and ever. Sin would then be removed as far as the east is from the west. You see, God knows the hearts of people and cannot be fooled by pretense. I hope this helps you understand the concept and the need for accepting the sacrifice personally, and changing you life.

Wow, you've got alot of great answers here! The main thing I think is sincerity, praying to God with your whole heart. Let me give you an example about this forgiveness: I was a drug addict. I did hard drugs, and anything I could for 15 years. I did as I pleased, and had a child in the meantime. I hurt whoever I wanted because it was all about me and what made me happy, if I was unhappy with something or someone I left, boom, out the door I went. I was deep into drugs and no clear thinking did I do for years.
There came a time that I finally realzied that I was miserable. The drugs weren't making me happy, I could'nt hold any relationship together, my child was getting older and watching this whole mess, and I realzied that I had made a mess of my life and I needed help.
Well, I remember going into the bathroom, sitting on the toilet(toilet seat down) and looking up to the ceiling and asking "God are you there? Are you really there? If you are, will you help me?
I had known some Christians, my boyfriend (who never has come away from the drugs) had great parents, they were saved, they always were really nice to me, loving me, altho they knew what we were doing. Well I called them and asked them if I could go to church with them, well you could have heard a pin drop, they were so quiet, and then so happy! They took me, I filled out a visitation card (the Pastor came to see me) and he came and visited with me for the longest time. He asked me if I wanted to ask Jesus into my heart and be forgiven, I said Yes!
Ever since that day I've had peace like I never had before in my heart. Ever since that day, I've got someone with me all the time to help me, I never go anywhere alone. Ever since that day I am loved, forgiven, and guided every step of the way............. I hope this helps, it's my testimony of being forgiven. It's all about where your heart is when you ask. If the prayer is sincere, He knows it and we are forgiven. If it is'nt sincere, He also knows this.

First of all, there is more to it than that. Believing in Jesus involves a personal investment and commitment to a lifestyle.
You can say "I believe in Jesus" all day long, but it means nothing if you don't really believe.
In order to truly believe in Jesus, you must have an understanding of who he is, and who you are in relation to him. If you are a christian, you are a friend of Jesus.
Here's an example:
If you accidentally run over your best friend's dog, he'll be upset for a while, but will probably forgive you. If you intentionally run over your best friend's dog because you thought it would be fun, thinking to yourself that "He'll get over it," you are not a real friend at all.
The difference with Jesus is that he knows you better than you know yourself. He knows how sincere you are.
Those "Christians" who thoughtlessly and selfishly live their lives with no evidence of their beliefs are not true Christians. The bible says they will be held to a higher level of accountability than unbelievers.
That doesn't mean that "True Christians" don't screw up from time to time. The bible says that "All have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God." That is the purpose of Jesus forgiveness.

Yes, you can be forgiven. but only if you are trutfully wishing to be forgiven. anyone can say words.
But whomever shall beleive in him shall not perish
If I truly ask for forgiveness. I do not go out the same breath or day and do it again.
If a friend did something to upset you and I mean really upset you and asked for your forgiveness and you truly forgave them. How woulld you feel if they did it over and over again?
Yes Jesus Christ was put on the cross to save our sins. and to give us everlasting life . I wasn't a christian years ago either. I beleived. after I was given a second chance at life, I am now a Christian. I dont push it. But when asked I do talk about it.

no, that's not quite how it works.
we all sin and therefore are "dead in our trespasses and sins" because "the wages of sin is death." The ultimate penalty for our sin was Christ's death on the cross. Because He paid that penalty, we no longer have to if we "believe in our heart and confess with our mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord." But Christ didn't just die. He also rose from the dead. The Bible says if we die with Him (through faith & repentence), we will also be "raised with Him in newness of life." This means that although, as Christians we are forgiven, we are also given the desire and power to follow Him (i.e. obedience, living rightly) through spiritual baptism (regeneration of the spirit). If that desire/power is not present, that person should "examine themselves to see if they are of the faith."
In other words, to more succinctly answer your question, the (true) Christian is forgiven, but if they truly are Christian they won't have the attitude of "well gee, I'm forgiven so now I'll do whatever I want." In fact, the Paul indicates that someone with that attitude is probably not really a Christian (one with a regenerated spirit).

How about this scenario :
You murder your wife.
Your brother offers to serve time in jail on your behalf.
You ask your brother for forgiveness and he agrees.
All is good, justice is served.
That's basically what the doctrine of forgiveness through Jesus' sacrifice tell us ... yet no sane individual would consider this situation to have been resolved fairly in any regard, as the guilty individual was not punished and an innocent man was punished.

You get forgiveness if you truly believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. You must REPENT of your sin - God knows when you're not sincere. And remember that when Jesus enters your heart you want to become more like Him. Hope you haven't seen any Christians that do the things you listed...
Peace be with you

You have to REPENT. Repent isnt just asking for forgiveness and continuing in your old ways. But its walking away from those habits. He'll forgive you because He loves you too much not to.
Acts 3:19
Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
Jesus took ALL your sins, your pains, your tears, everything on the cross, and bore it for you. We were saved by GRACE.. i heard this awesome quote once that it said "mercy is being withheld from what we deserve, and grace is being given what we don't deserve" ... without salvation, according to the law, we would be destined for hell. But because Jesus came and broke the law.. He paid the price. For you.

You have to be loyal and honest to Jesus Christ. You have to live your life according to his word. You can't blasphemy everyday and expect God to forgive you time after time. I don't remember the bible saying Jesus was getting high, drinking every night, cursing...
Just ask Jesus into your life and tell him (and be sincere) you're willing to give up your life for him. You will be amazed at the outcome. Jesus is truly a wonderful man.
