I think you may have got more bum answers than you thought..:-) Egg shell isn't just another name for low gloss, and it is a bit special. Emulsion comes usually in silk or matt, first has a sheen to it, the other, Matt, has no sheen, They are water based. Eggshell has a finish, just like it says on the tin, perfect description because it is, like eggshell. But proper eggshell is solvent based, and very hard wearing, often used in hospitals, industrial kitchens, municipal buildings where a tough washable/cleanable finish is required.

There are some dodgy answers here - no wonder people have gloss paint virtually dripping off their woodwork! Eggshell is indeed a fairly flat finish generally used in private homes for woodwork or external surfaces like window sills. It is extremely hard wearing. There are a lot of environmentally friendly eggshells available that are water-based but traditionally eggshell has fairly high VOCs. Try looking at Farrow and Ball's website - they give a really good explanation of eggshell and other types of paints available.

Just ask your paint supplier for an eggshell finish paint. After reading all the answers here one could go batty. No wonder so many people hate painting. Most interior wall finishes are a flat, egg shell, satin or semi gloss and that is what most retailers supply. Pick your color and tell the seller of the paint what type of finish you want and your problem is solved. Good luck and have fun.

Eggshell is a finish mixed into the paint, like
Flat, Semigloss, or Gloss. Just tell your retailer you want Eggshell finish when you order your paint.

The RIGHT answer is that the painted surface, when it is dry looks very, very matt (ie absolutely no sheen at all) - just like an eggshell in fact.
The colour is immaterial of course, it is the "shiny-ness" or lack of it that matters.
Hope this clears it all up!!

Go to your local Waffle House or Denny's
Plenty of eggshells there.

I think you can buy 'eggshell' paint. The finish looks like it's covered in loads of tiny cracks all over it.

Ok, I looked it up and I am editing my answer. I didn't know it's just another name for satin paint. More durable than flat, less glossy than semi-gloss. They said to imagine the slight gloss of an eggshell.
