If you have the money, take him to the vet. Sometimes it is something simple that can be treated... Could be painful teeth, in which case maybe if you buy him soft dogfood (such as canned) or soak his in water first, he'd be able to eat it...

Take the dog to a vet to find out if the reason the dog won't
eat is something readily fixed (bad teeth) or more insideous.

Bad teeth can be fixed by simply removing them and feeding
the dog soft foods.

Does the dog still drink WARM (not hot, not cold) water?
Maybe chicken soup?

This is tough - in all probability, your dog has come to the
end of his or her comfortable life. You might be able to
get a few more months - but make sure that there isn't
some other painful thing going on.

Does the dog still play? Does he greet you at the door?
Is the dog having any fun being a dog?

What do you mean, he won't eat? At all? For how long? It could be the heat, or he just doesn't feel that well. Did you change food lately? Try giving him some rice or a bit of potatoe or even some chicken and see if he eats that. If all that fails, and it's going on for more than a couple of days, I would take him to the vet to be safe.

my dog was 8 when she stopped eating her dry dog food. we switched to wet, which she ate for a while. he probably isn't telling you that he's ready to die, but this usually does come with old age. my dog lasted for about another year, but she also had heart problems(we think) so it's not like she starved. I would suggest that you talk to your vet and see what he/she thinks. But definitely try a different food as your dog has to eat. Best of luck.

Have you tried warming the food up or trying a good canned food? As for him getting ready to die I don't know. If his health is bad and you think his quality of life is poor maybe you should consult your vet. Don't let him suffer

Sometimes it can be that he is not feeling well. I mean, if people aren't feeling well or sick, would they eat still? He's probably telling you that he doesn't have much of an appetite.

Before you assume that your dog is ready to go...
Consider this:

-bored of his regular food
-he's sick
-take him to a hollistic or alternative Vet as they might be able to figure out what's best without having to resort to medicine

Good luck.

I agree.. Take the dog to a vet to get him checked out. My friends dog when he got really old didn't eat either... we had to soak his food in water first to make it softer because his teeth hurt so bad he could not chew his food.

But again, take the dog to a vet and see what they say.

take your dog to the vet. It may just be that he's under the weather and needs medical attention. So like I said, take the dog to the vet.
