Since you do not mention your camera make or model, I will assume that you have a Point & shoot camera and you either held the camera at arms lenght or set it on a table (using shutter delay or timer) and tried to frame yourself either standing or sitting.

Holding at arms lenght is never flattering. The camera needs to use wide angle mode to focus and that will add the curvature of the lens to the image (makes you look rounder). Next the flash will be too close and reflect off any smooth surface (your forehead). Get a tripod and mount the camera level. Move at least 10 feet away (further will be more flattering). Shoot outdoors in late evening or early morning light ( just before sunset or sunrise), as that light is most flattering. Face the sun for best lighting. Use the Shutter Delay (timer) to do your self portrait. Practice, Practice, Practice. If you have a problem with complexion or heat then use so makeup powder on your forehead, nose, and cheeks. This will breakup any reflective surfaces.

Are you taking the picture yourself, or is someone else taking them? First, get farther away from the camera. Closeups aren't that flattering on most people. If you're doing the picture yourself, get a tripod and use a self-timer. Have the lens at telephoto, and stand or sit several feet away from the camera. Don't stand full-on; turn your body about 1/8 to 1/4 turn to one side, and look sligtly over your shoulder to the camera. That will give a more slimming look. If you're still shiny, try a little powder, or bounce the flash, if you can, off a white or off-white ceiling or wall. Smile naturally, and try several poses to see what looks best.

If your camera has a zoom lens you might have had it set for wide-angle. That has the effect of giving portrait shots a plump and unflattering look.

If you can set it to normal or even a little on the tele-photo side that will give a much nicer face shot.

Some phones have auto settings for your quality of pictures others you have to manually set. I don't know what kind of phone you have but when you are in picture mode click on options or settings and just play around with the quality settings your phone offers. It doesn't hurt to wipe down your fore head just in case your were sweaty or something! j/k
