Why that date?
You see, Ahmadinejad (Iranian leader) is a strong believer in the Shi’ite tradition of a 12th imam, the so-called “hidden” Imam Mahdi who Allah has miraculously kept alive since his disappearance in 874 AD. As the story goes, Imam Mahdi will return at a time of great global chaos, oppression and bloodshed and usher in an era of (Islamic) justice.

Ahmadinejad sees himself as Allah’s instrument to pave the way for Imam Mahdi, and constantly uses public appearances to urge his countrymen to prepare to back him in this task.

Rumor is, Imam Mahdi could be returning this August (or shortly thereafter), Ahmadinejad has made clear his confidence that he and other true believers can affect this apocalyptic timetable, and will use all means at his disposal! Anyone here about this? any more info?

After the death of a Ruler there will be some dispute between the people. At that time a citizen of Madina will flee (from Madina) and go to Makkah. While in Makkah, certain people will approach him between Hajrul Aswad and Maqaame Ibraheem, and forcefully pledge their allegiance to him.

Thereafter a huge army will proceed from Syria to attack him but when they will be at Baida, which is between Makkah and Madina, they will be swallowed into the ground.

On seeing this, the Abdaals of Shaam as well as large numbers of people from Iraq will come to him and pledge their allegiance to him. Then a person from the Quraish, whose uncle will be from the Bani Kalb tribe will send an army to attack him, only to be overpowered, by the will of Allah. This (defeated) army will be that of the Bani Kalb. Unfortunate indeed is he who does not receive a share from the booty of the Kalb. This person (Imam Mahdi) will distribute the spoils of war after the battle. He will lead the people according to the Sunnat and during his reign Islam will spread throughout the world. He will remain till seven years (since his emergence). He will pass away and the Muslims will perform his Janazah salaat

according to the prophet, and Rasulullah this is who is will be:

1.Be from among the family of Prophet(SAW), among the descendants of Fatima(RA);
2.Have a broad forehead and pointed noise;
3.Appear in one night;
4.Appear just before the day of judgment;
5.Have same name as hazrat Muhammad(SAW);
6.Escape from Madina to Makkah where people will pledge allegiance to him;
7.Receive pledge and help of Iraqi people;
8.Fight in battles;
9.Rule over the Arabs for seven years according to Sunnah;
10.Spread justice and equity on earth;
11.Eradicate tyranny and oppression;
12.Lead a prayer in Mekkah which Jesus(pbuh) will follow in;
13.NOT be the same individual as the Promised Messiah (Jesus).

Identification of the Prophesied Imam Mahdi

The Holy Prophet Muhammad(SAW) has prophesied about several events that will occur just before the advent of the day of judgment. Among these, Rasulullah(SAW) has foretold the advent of one of his descendants, Al Mahdi (the guided one), which will materialize when the believers are severely oppressed in every corner of the world. He will fight the oppressors, unite the Muslims, bring peace and justice to the world, rule over the Arabs, and lead a prayer in Mekkah at which Isa(pbuh) (Jesus) will be present.

<<<>(wikipedia)
"Before the appearance of the one who will rise, peace be upon him, the people will be reprimanded for their acts of disobedience by a fire that will appear in the sky and a redness that will cover the sky. It will swallow up Baghdad, and will swallow up Kufa. Their blood will be shed and houses destroyed. Death will occur amid their people and a fear will come over the people of Iraq from which they shall have no rest."
There will be an insurgence by the Sufyani, a descendant of Abu Sufyan. Abu Sufyan is considered by Shias to have been one of Muhammad's greatest enemies, along with his son, Muawiya I and Muawiya's son, Yazid. According to Shia narrations, the Sufyani's revolution will start from Palestine/Jordan, and his reign of tyranny will span the Middle East from Iraq to Egypt.
A loud call from the sky signals the Mahdi's appearance.

Characteristics of the Mahdi

Sunni and Shi'a sources
His name is generally accepted to be Mohammad, Mahdi is just a title.
Some Muslims claim that his name can be an accepted variant of Muhammad such as Ahmed or Mahmoud; similarly, accepted variants of his father Abdullah's name include Abdul Rahman, Abdul Magid, and Abdul Hamid. Supporters of this idea quote a passage from the prophet Muhammad in the Hadith which is interpreted: "His name is like my name, and his father's name is like my father's name."
He is tall.
His facial features are similar to those of Muhammad.
His character is like that of Muhammad, he would follow him perfectly and shall err not.
Sunni sources
He has a fair complexion
He has a broad forehead and a prominent nose

i have researched this also out of curiosity, and have been unable to find any dates--the signs must be present, everything staged correctly.....where did you find the aug 22nd date? and was there a year attatched to it---i have been unable to find any dates--so if you did it's possible that it is a false mandhi--thee have been many claims--example:

Claims of being the Mahdi
Main article: People claiming to be the Mahdi
There have been several personalities over time who have considered themselves the Mahdi prophesied in Islam. Similar to the notion of a Messiah in the Judeo-Christian religions, the notion of a Mahdi as a redeemer to establish a society has lent itself to various interpretations leading to different claims within minorities or by individuals within Islam.

One claimant to the title of Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad, emerged in the Sudan in 1880, and was able to amass a large army known as the Ansar, or followers. The Mahdi established an independent Sudanese state under sharia that lasted in the face of Egyptian and British opposition until 1898.
