Congrats on the crate training first off. In the long run it will help both of you out in having a safe, comforting spot that's all theirs. Here's what I have always done and it seems to work well. First off make sure the crate is inviting to the pup. Special toys that are only in there, or a special toy its grown to love. Nice soft bedding too is important. Make sure the crate is not in a noisey, busy area but rather a quiet spot that's nice and cool. During the day put the puppy in there for some quiet time after playing and going potty. Usually 15-hour for nap times and calm down time. Do this off and on during the day and never take the pup out when it's crying, wait till they calm down. Great way to potty train!! I use a small treat at bed time. I learned it from a couple I bought last two boxers from. Tell the puppy in a low excited voice its bedtime or load up.....what ever you choose but stick with it......let the puppy smell the treat and lead them to the crate. Entice the puppy in, you may have to help him in. Then tell him good boy/girl and give them the treat. The hardest part is ignoring the crys but the pup will calm down in a day or two so long as the crate is in a quiet spot. My boxers each have thier own crates and both go in their crates on their own for quiet time now. It's a safe, secure place to them, they know they can trust. I tell them to "load up" and they do and wait for their treat.

The thing that helped me was I put the crate next to my bed. Actually the trainer that I'm using gave me the suggestion. ALso, don't make it seem like a punishment or negative in any way. Put a favorite blanket that you've rubbed on yourself in the crate and leave the door open all the time and try to get him to go in and out of it during the day so that he's relaxed and comfortable with it. Now, my dog wants to go in when its bed time and isn't upset if I have to leave the house and crate her.

It usually takes about a week for a puppy to get used to being in a crate at night if you're crate training properly, depending on the dog and whether you let them sleep all day or keep them awake so that they're tired.

A couple of tricks, Play some low music, give him a stuffed toy. Also if the crate is too big put a box in the crate to make seem smaller. He will not be so over whelmed.

crying for 20 minutes isn't bad at all. I have found that moving the crate into my bedroom was the best thing to do. I know it sounds odd, but if you are at one end of the house, and the pup is at the other, it feels no sense of security. Try moving the crate to your room, and then when he starts to cry, you can reassure him in a soothing voice and he can sleep knowing you are still near by. Give it a try.

It feels like it takes forever! It really helped my puppy to put an old towel in with her, it had my scent on it, and she curled up on it and calmed down, later when she was potty trained, I gave her my old pillow.
Not a good idea to put food in there with him, as dogs have a natural reaction to "go" about 30 min after they eat, and then she may cry harder.
Try giving him a chew toy, like a rawhide stick or bone, to distract him.
Also, when I put mine in her crate i tell her to "go to bed" and now that she is older, she goes on her own.
Never make it seem like a punishment, to go to the crate, or you will never win the war!

it can take anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks. mine took about 5 days to get used to sleeping in the crate, but each dog is different. but trust me, once they get used to it they will even go in it and lay down when they are tired during the day. Good luck with your new puppy!!!

it helps to put them in the crate for more then just bed time. It took my dog about 2 weeks to be as kennel trained as possible for a hound.
Just keep at it and don't give in. They'll learn to like it eventually and you'll be glad you stuck it out.
it also depends on what you do when he cries... if we coodle him and talk to him and say "oh poor baby... you poor thing..." or even yelling at him to stop will increase (and def. not end) the behavior. When he cried. Ignore!!! If you work on it during the day, let him cry, as soon as he stops, RUSH over and let him out and priase the bejeebers out of him! It works.

Maybe put him in the crate with a small amount of food. If you have enough space, move the crate into your bedroom.

They don't cry so much because they are in a crate but rather because they want to be with someone. (Remember they are used to sleeping with other puppies/their mother)
