You mean a copy of Microsoft Word itself? There's nowhere legal you can get that for free, you *have* to pay for it if you want a legitimate copy. Well, not a full version anyway, there's a 60 day trial version available here:

Also, there's a free application called OpenOffice which can read and write Microsoft Word files with a certain amount of compatibility. It's here if you fancy checking it out:

If it is free then it is most likely illegal. Microsoft doesn't give out free copies of it's software.
You might want to start looking at places you can find it discounted if you can't afford full price.

izombix got the right answer first and should get "best answer" credit.
I've used both MS Office and Open Office for some time and have had no problem using MS document in OO or creating OO docs for MS Word.

There are also discounted versions specifically for Students and teachers available.

I don't think you can get it for free but if you are just having trouble
opening documents then save them to "My Documents" right click and scroll down to "Open with" and click "Word Pad". The document may not be formatted correctly but it will open.
