Ummm....to let the bullet pass through it toward a target...

To shoot the slug/shot through! The longer the barrel the more accurate it should be. The smaller the barrel at the end the tighter the pattern of shot will be. Some are double (two shots).
Without a barrel the shell would blow up in your hand, the barrel directs the slug/shot out of the gun!

like a barrel on any firearm, small to large, to direct the charge out to a prescribed distance and direction with designed accuracy.

to aim the projectile in the general direction you are pointing the gun at i think..
