To shoot the slug/shot through! The longer the barrel the more accurate it should be. The smaller the barrel at the end the tighter the pattern of shot will be. Some are double (two shots).
Without a barrel the shell would blow up in your hand, the barrel directs the slug/shot out of the gun!
