Nutritional Factors
Much controversy exists as to whether the taking of certain vitamins will help an MS patient. There have been reports of improvement following the taking of some vitamins, but the medical profession in general believes that there is no real evidence or support for many of the conclusions drawn. The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy states that vitamin preparations can be taken for “their psychotherapeutic and tonic effects.” Recommended in this regard are nicotinic acid (niacin), and vitamins B1 and B12. French doctors who used vitamin B12 for treating MS reported considerable improvement in patients.

A lack of B12 causes dementia-like symptoms. That's why when it's suspected that you have dementia, they do a blood test to see if it's just a vitamin deficiency. If it is, they give you B12 shots and you're cured. It's not REAL dementia.
If you're looking for the actual scientific thing that happens in the background, I don't know.

Chronic malutrition, especially of vitamin B, is associated with Korsakoff's syndrome which is a type of dementia found in chronic alcoholics and those who are severly malnurited. There is debate as to whether it actually causes the dementia or is only associated with it. Treatment is usually with vitamin B but it cannot reverse the dementia only stop it. This is because the dementia is the product of brain damage

Vitamin B-12 does NOT cause dementia!
Maybe you mean B-12 deficiency?
All B vitamins are necessary for proper nerve function.

as afar i know the lack of vitamin B12, will cause tiredness, dizziness and problems with the nails, this is due poor absorption of iron from the body, to red blood cells that carry the oxygen. this give rise to a condition call pernicious anaemia, which is picked up by a blood test and treated with vit B12 injection for life
