I am not familar with a tradition that says you have to get your father a gift for your wedding. But if you wish to get him one. I would suggest a picture of you and your bride in a nice frame. Or maybe an photo album with some sentiment of "Your Growing Family" or something similar that he can put pictures from the wedding and future kids and family events.

When I got married, I paid for my dad's tuxedo rental. I didn't buy him a gift, per se, since it was my wedding.

If you are the groom, just thank dad for all the support and wisdom that brought you this far. Mention that you couldn't do it without him being there for you all these years.

That my friend, is the best gift he will ever receive!

What a nice thought -

My husband and I gave each of our parents (mom and step dad), (dad and step mom) etc. A 5x5 silver engraved photo album engraved with the date of our wedding and our first names. Then, when the proofs came out (they're always 5x5) we had a nice selection printed for the album.

I like the engraving idea.... put something nice and sentimental on whatever you get engraved. You get presents for the wedding party, why not your dad? You wouldn't be in the wedding without him.

YOU don't give your Dad on your wedding day. HE gives you the gift.

It isn't actually necessary that you give you dad a gift for this occasion, but the gesture would be very nice and probably appreciated. An engraved money clip or a very nice pen set would be appropriate.
