I'm moving from Orlando to LA in a few months. I'm on a budget, I have a car but I'm scared of driving cross country alone. The only furniture I have really is a computer and a desk chair and a desk... What's the most efficient way to do it? And safest?

Sell your desk, desk chair. Put your computer in your car. Buy another desk and chair in LA. This is cheaper than pay for a U-Haul. Drive 4hrs and take a break. Look at your map for major city or truck stops to sleep. Take some pictures and go site see on the way. Enjoy your trip. Dont' rush over to LA.

Orlando Florida, or Orlando California?
this distinction could affect the answer.
how expensive is the desk and chair? (are they just wal-mart/target type furniture-in-a-box?) if this is the case sell the desk and chair for a few bucks or give away. then replace them at your destination. (if they are particularly fancy, go the U-Haul route)
as for the computer, you could probably find a way to load this into your car so that it doesn't bounce about so much (system unit behind the front seat, perhaps) then load in your other personal effects, clothing, books, etc...
if you are moving from orlando CA to Los Angeles, then the drive might only be a half-day and you might not need a driving companion....if from florida, however, take the friend, share the driving, and send them back by train/plane/bus after you arrive and are unloaded

Don't be afraid. I've done it plenty. Just join Triple A ...AAA, the auto club so if you break down you get towed. From Orlando, it's easy. Get to the 10 Interstate and keep going. You wind up at the beach...the Pacific Ocean.

Find a Friend that has lots of money to drive with you and fly back and rent one of those little u-haul trailers to put your computer and chair in if it does not fit in your car.
