it says use within 4 weeks but I wonder if this is just a guide. I don't seem to have enough breast milk today (probably coz its hot) and I used this weeks ago but stored it correctly. I'd hate to poison my baby but I live in the sticks and can't get out to buy some fresh stuff...

OMG chill out, i'm sure babies have ingested worse than powdered milk that has been opened a few weeks! I just wanted the general concensus not an attack! the use by date is 2007 it simply says use within 4 weeks of opening. if you knew how hard it was for me to get to a shop (or even a neighbour for that matter) you'd probably suggest I don't let my baby starve! And I apologise in advance for not being well enough prepared to have forward thought i'd run out of breast milk.

for all those obnoxious people: yes I do love my baby very much and I can't understand why you all are giving me a hard time for asking a question! I know a bit about litigation and I was simply asking if the guide was more likely in place to protect the manuafacturers from a miniscule risk that they'd be sued if something did happen rather than protecting babies! but fine I won't use it, he'll have to go hungry! and by the way, I drink like a fish and my pee is straw coloured

I wouldn't recommend it! Either get some new formula somehow (I like the idea of asking a chemist to bring you some - or perhaps you could ring your health visitor, as they have a stock of formula and are out in the community), or drink way more and persevere with the breastfeeding. You could always try giving your baby some cooled, boiled water to sip on whilst your body is replenishing the milk supply.
By the way, I don't think anyone has was making a personal attack or was particulary aggressive in answering - we just wouldn't want your baby to get sick, especially if it is hard for you to get to a hospital (I assume it would be, as you can't even get to a shop)! It's up to you if you want to heed our advice, so there's no need to get so upset -after all, you did ask for our opinion!

I am sure you love your baby very much, otherwise you wouldn't have asked this question! There are a couple things you need to look at to decide if it is safe: Is the formula in a metal can or plastic container? Metal no, plastic okay.
Does it smell normal or does it have an "acid" smell? normal okay, acid no.
Is the coloring normal? If it is okay, if it has a Grey, brown or silver tint then no.
Also, know that formula will "break down" and be not as nourishing but it usually won't spoil for 12 or 14 weeks. Use your best judgment.

Oh gawd no !
Get yourself some single serving dried formula (they come in long plastic tubes like kool aid singles) and use as needed or smaller cans of ready made milk and use it all the same day within 24 hours.
Sometimes breast milk isn't enough as your baby grows and you will feel as if all you do is feed the baby. When you don't feed the baby, make sure you are milking yourself because as you know, the more you use, the more you will produce.

No you cannot use it. The four weeks is not just a GUIDE, it is recommendation because after that it is NO GOOD. Supplement with water for the time being. Drink LOTS of water yourself, that will help in production of more breast milk. I hope this has helped.

I'm assuming you mean the powder... and yes, that's fine... but for the future since you're breastfeeding, it can be stored in the fridge by putting the original can in a ziploc bag for much longer than 4 weeks.
While you're giving the baby a bottle... please... please drink some water or KoolAid or something else not carbonated and with no caffiene. You're probably dehydrated and the baby is extra thirsty too.

If it's powder it should be okay, depending on how you stored it. But not liquid. Dump it out. Try powdered milk if you have it or dilute some milk. I wouldn't take any chances of any poisening. Your body probably isn't producing because you're not drinking enough water or other liquids.

I would not use that milk.If you don't use the milk in 4 weeks like it said to then it could make the baby very sick.

Don't use it.
Drink lots of fluids mom, so much that it seems like you have to pee every 30 minutes. Your milk supply should come back without much problem.
