Because the diastolic blood pressure is the pressure that is always present in your arteries, even when the heart is at rest. Systolic blood pressure is only present when your ventricles are contracting to pump blood. So if your diastolic is elevated, that's a constant increased pressure on your blood vessels and can cause much more severe long-term effects.

Diastolic is the point on where our heart relax and expand. Some who have heart failure don't have the normal relaxation of the heart. The pumping chambers are affected and it is harder for the blood to go into those arteries or ventricle and can cause some congestion . I am not an expert on this field though. Today I just went for a checkup due to hypertension, I was more worried about my diastolic..it never goes below 110. For me that elevated diastolic. As what you said high blood pressure is risky.
I remember while i was taking a vital sign of one patient, the diastolic was still pumping to lower than 60mm Hg and after 10 minutes the patient died.
I go to this site to know more about blood pressure http://www.healthandage.com/html/res/aging_of_you/content/10.htm

Really, both the systolic and diastolic BP's are important. If either one is elevated, then one has hypertension and it needs to be dealt with. However, physiologically speaking, the heart spends more time in diastole and therefore some people, including some health care professionals, believe elevated diastolic BP is more hazardous.

I am not a doc...but...Diastolic is the "squeeze" quotient and Systolic is the "fill" quotient of the heart. Therefore the harder the heart has the squeeze, the more stress on the organ, therefore it is the more important number to monitor. Blood pressure of any kind is NOT bad for your help, your heart has to work, doesn't it? It just shouldn't have to work too hard is all. Hey...maybe I should have been a doc after all...

It is NOT!!!! Systolic is more important...things have changed over last 10 years...The ideal blood pressure is 120/80 or less. High is more than 140/90. You need to start getting concerened when it reaches 130/85 and stays there.

The upper number is the upper pressure. Too much pressure means you can pop a vein or artery and that's the end of you
