This is not to hurt your feelings at all. But, let me tell you, as a guy, if we say that phrase to a girl it means 1 of 2 things or both.
A. I have another girl.
B. I am sick of you.
Now. And this is straight out of the guy handbook.
The best, nay, the ONLY thing you can do to come out of this a winner is this:
You must play the "He who cares the least wins" card.
Agree with him. Say it was fun and wish him luck.
No sarcasm. No anger. And just let it be.
Do not call him. Do not email him. Do not text him.
Trust me. He will be scratching his head and wondering why it does not bother you.
He may even try to get you back. How you play that is up to you, but no matter what, if he wants to hook up, you have plans. Make him think you have much better things to do. But be cool about it.
Do not tell any guy I gave you guy secrects by the way.
But trust me, it will work. Unless he just realized he is gay.

It means that he needs time away from the relationship to think about whether or not he wants to continue in the relationship.
Often it is just a way to break up. It means he doesn't want to hang out with you or act like a couple any more because he needs time to think about the relationship and whether or not to stay together.
Often this is the end of the relationship. But it can be just a small break in order to think aobut what he wants.
If you don;t hear from him again, he took the break and doens't want to get back together again.

Well it sounds like his not interested in you the way he use to, its possible that he wants to work it out, but his not finding a solution, or maybe someone else in the picture. The simplest way, he really saying Its over, and he just don't want to hear you ending up with someone else, because of the attachment you guys have together there is no more love. Protect yourself now a prayer would help alot.

that means he is deciding whether he still wants this relationship or not. You may have to sit him down and discuss exactly what he wants to happen during this break, but usually it means you talk less and can see other people. If he said this, he doesnt appreciate how awesome you are and how much you have to offer. I'd say tell him to just forget about it and move on.

it seems like some people here have either good and bad experiences...
try asking your bf, communication is key, if he suspects that you distrust him (which he might) tell him you don't know what it means (you were asking it right?) but you also have to show him that you care... if he doesn't understand... he's not worth your time
some may think this is stupid and/or random because it's too direct... it's also the root of misunderstandings and break ups (not unless it is a break up, but if you have it really good, then don't mess it up)

He wants space...without you in it. A guy doesn't ask for a break unless he feels "suffocated" (wimp) or unless he's got his eye on someone else and wants to see how that pans out. For the latter, he tells you "let's take a break" because if it doesn't work out with Lady 2, he wants to be able to fall back on you.

Could mean that he wants out or that he just wants some space.
Sometime men need space when they are falling hard and feel like their freedom is being lost. I would say give him space and if it is meant to be then it will be.
You know the old verse. If you love something set it free if it comes back it was yours if it doesnt it never was

it means he needs time ur stressing him out.u know i used that line on many girls 4 me it meant its over i need time alone.so u must be like doing something to the point where he is forced to say this.so think about how ur treating him and c if u can do better.it might be to late but if u realize what ur doing wrong then stop that quick might still be a chance.now if u think bout it and its him then he dont deserve u and u should just move along.good luck

Need some time alone to think LOL thats a joke. The guy wants to date other females, he may already have someone. If anyone ever says this to you, show him the door. Do not wait, do not take him back, period.

How would you try to tell someone that you don't want to hurt, that you just want to be with them any more?
Tell them you want to take a break...
Sorry but he may be too scared to break up with you. This may be a good opportunity for you though. Tell him no problem and start dating other guys...
