Do you have to call another cop to the scene to be an objective authority? What happens if the cop is at fault?

Has this happened to you or someone you know? If so, what happened?

This happened to someone i know. A cop cut across three lanes and hit her car, totalling it. Another cop will have to come to the scene. They cannot be the subject of the investigation, and the investigator. She said that they compinsated her pretty quickly.

I have been browsing more than 4 hours today looking for answer to the same question, but I haven't found a more interesting debate like this. it is pretty worth enough for me.

No, he would call for backup and the other officer would take over the investigation because the first officer would not be considered objective in that situation.

My friend's husband is a cop and he was in an accident while on duty. The investigation was completed by the local police (he is highway patrol). They did rule him at fault, but the court case hasn't been completed yet. He is being sued in civil court as well.

The same thing as if you got into an accident with anyone else.

I was side swiped by an officer who was late to work. My fault, points on my record and there was nothing that I could do about it.

ha ha. A buddy of mine was driving along when a cop car went zooming past him and then stopped for some stupid reason.

The cop jumped out and gave him hell. Suddenly angry cops were everywhere. Eventually one drove up who knew my friend.

"Hey Joe, what happened?"

"I was driving along and this clown goes past me about 50 miles per hour and then hits his brakes right in front of me. He's only angry because it's his fault. I have nothing else to say"

He didn't get a ticket and nothing much happened. there was a small dent in his bumper.

Yes...you need to call in another unit. If it clearly is the cop's fault..probably the worst thing that will happen to him is he'll get promoted to a desk job.

I've seen it happen, I saw a cop rear end someone. Unfortunately I don't know the outcome.

I would guess outside of hiring a good lawyer even if the cop is at fault the odds are stacked against you since cops are more used to being in traffic court than the average person is based on their job.
