I do not recommend a Yellow Tail or any wine you can buy in a giant bottle. I like the Mark West Pinot Noir, which is about 12$ at the store but sold for about 40 in a restaurant. Another one is the "Red Truck" california wine. This is an up and coming nice solid table wine.

What's "too expensive" to you? To me, that's under $50.

Which would mean a

2000 Boroli barolo
Fontelloro Red Wine
2001 E Guigal Chateauneuf du Pape
Sinnean Resonance or Wyeast
Goose Ridge Syrah
Raymond Generations Cabernet
Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir

For under $25:

Six Prong Red
Cycles Gladiator Syrah
Amberhill Cabernet
Pepi Sangiovese
House Red
Chiaramonte
Maryhill Reserve Sangiovese

Good luck to you!

Yellow Tail Shiraz is good, also the infamous 2 Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's, also known as Charles Shaw wine, which is sold for $2.00 in California, or $2.99 elsewhere, and it is a great Napa Valley wine...no joke!

A pinot noir by Sterling or a Robert Mondavi Private Selection pinot noir - both around $10 in this retail market.
Pinot noir is light enough to hold its own with Thanksgiving turkey dinner and bold enough to sip with a grilled steak.

I love Yellowtail. Good quality cheap Australian wine. My favorite red (very light and fruity) is the Shiraz-Grenache. However, do be aware that once you open a bottle of Yellowtail, it doesn't stay very well in the bottle over multiple days.

There's a zillion of them, but a bulletproof choice is Gallo of Sonoma. If you look around, you should be able to find them at $10.00 or less (on sale) . All of their wines are a great deal for the money.

Calindi is right, Yellowtail is excellent. I prefer the Merlot, the large bottle is around $12.
If you like Merlot, another good one is Blackstone. It costs a few more dollars, but has a hint of sweetness, and is very smooth.

Robert Mondavi--some of the Coastals are pretty cheap but still OK to drink.
