Pontius Pilate wrote to the Roman emperor Tiberius Caesar:
"...At the time he was crucified, there was darkness over all the world, the sun being darkened at midday, and the stars appearing, but in them there appeared no luster; and the moon, as if turned into blood, failed in her light."
"... unreasonable as it seems to me (unreasonable of course, because a solar eclipse could not take place at the time of the full moon, and it was at the season of the Paschal full moon that Christ died).”--Julian Africanus, 221 A.D.

In order to explain why the sky darkened, we must accept two things: 1) that the Bible is telling the truth when it says that the sky did darken as Jesus died; and 2) that God and evil cannot exist in the same place at once.
After we accept these two premises, we acknowledge that "God" is the presence of light or love. The point of Jesus' death was that he took all the evil and sin of the earth onto himself. Therefore, if he was sin, then God could not be with him since God and sin cannot exist in the same place at once. God was forced to turn away because at that moment, Jesus was not holy but in fact evil (thanks to the weight of the world's evil;ness). When God turned away, the light left from the earth.
(Of course this is a purely religious argument. If you're looking for scientific evidence, one could simply say that it was metaphorical. Pilate did not wish to crucify Jesus but he wanted to please the people. He understood on some level that Jesus was a good man, and so perhaps he used the metaphor of light disappearing from the world to mean that the world lost the light of a good man's teachings. Romans were romantics.)

Anything is possible with God. The things that occured during Jesus' death were prophesied. This was more proof to the religious leaders that Jesus was the Messiah. They already knew that he was but didn't wish to give up money and popularity.
It doesn't matter what is the norm. If God chooses to darken the sky He created the sky and has control of all things.
At the time that Jesus was crucified not only did the sky darken etc but also the earth shook and the curtains in the Holy of holies ripped from top to the bottom exposing the whole temple. I believe that the reason this occured was a sign to the Jews by God that they had just rejected their Messiah and I think when these things occured they all knew it.

the sky darkened because Jesus just gave his life up to save us all from sin. In the olden days, before Jesus ppl would have to sacrafice animals, but instead Jesus came to sacrafice his life so we wouldnt have to do that but instead ask god forgiveness. Remembering the Jesus was God in human form, the sky darkened at his death, and the earth shook.

Because the whole earth mourned when they saw their Creator dying on the cross.
The earth quaked and the Sun would not give her light.
Even nature can attest to the Power and Greatness of God.

I think that the sky turned dark when Jesus did because creation (the universe) saw the evil that mankind had done and was ashamed and turned her face away.
Sad to think that!!
